Heise: Brand overview

Heinz Heise founded Heinz Heise Verlag in Hanover, Germany, in 1949, beginning the publishing business associated with the Heise family. The company first printed manuals for radio enthusiasts and technical materials used during Germany’s postwar reconstruction. During the 1950s, its catalog expanded into other technical fields, with accuracy and editorial control shaping the publishing model.

In 1977, the publisher launched Elrad, its first periodical, focused on electronics and radio engineering. Computer Technik, later known as c’t, followed in 1983 and built its identity around independent testing and detailed computer analysis. In 1986, iX entered the market for IT professionals, covering advanced systems, software and workplace technology.

The company moved online in 1994 with the Heise portal, later known as Heise Online. Telepolis followed in 1996 with reporting on internet policy and digital culture. During the 2000s, Heise added digital services, conferences, seminars, and new formats for technical information. Podcasts, video, mobile apps, and new editorial sections expanded its media output during the 2010s.

In the 2020s, the company expanded into fields beyond media and technology journalism. In June 2024, Heise signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with Hannover 96, reportedly worth about €1.5 million per season and including branding on the team’s shirts. The contract covered three football seasons. In August 2024, Philipp Heise returned to Dynamo Dresden.
