Intesa Sanpaolo was created in 2007 through the merger of Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo IMI. The group’s origins date back to the 16th century. In 1563, Compagnia di San Paolo was established in Turin as a charitable institution. Over time, the structure evolved into a banking institution, contributing to the formation of the Italian financial system.

Sanpaolo IMI was formed in 1998 through the merger of San Paolo di Torino and the investment bank IMI. This bank was founded in 1931 to support industry during the economic crisis.

Banca Intesa was created in 1997 from the merger of Cariplo and Banco Ambrosiano Veneto. Cariplo began operations in 1823. Banco Ambrosiano Veneto originated from a 19th-century cooperative bank and became one of the largest private banks in Italy.

After its formation, Intesa began to expand. In 1999, the company acquired Banco di Napoli. In 2003, it bought Banca Commerciale Italiana. In 2006, negotiations began for a merger with Sanpaolo IMI.

The merger was completed on January 1, 2007. The new bank, with assets exceeding 600 billion euros, became Italy’s largest financial institution. The first years were dedicated to integration and adaptation.

In 2013, the bank fully repaid government funds. Later, the group expanded its international presence, invested in digital technologies, and underwent restructuring.

In 2020, Intesa Sanpaolo acquired UBI Banca, strengthening its position in the domestic market. In 2023, a deal was followed by a deal with Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472.

The company serves about 14 million clients. The bank has a network of more than 3,500 branches and operates in 25 countries, remaining a leading participant in the European banking sector.

When the merger of the two largest Italian banks, Banca Intesa and Sanpaolo IMI, was officially completed on January 1, 2007, the new banking group Intesa Sanpaolo unveiled a visual identity that unites the heritage and traditions of both institutions. Designer Bob Norda and the FM Milano studio created the brand identity, emphasizing Italy’s cultural and historical symbols.

The Intesa Sanpaolo logo features the two-word name set in large serif Latin letters. Both words are rendered in green, a color inherited from Sanpaolo IMI. Between the words is a symbol: a square with a thin orange border. Inside is an element composed of multicolored lines in green, blue, and orange, forming an image reminiscent of an ancient aqueduct or bridge. A horizontal yellow stripe runs above these lines.

The element within the square references Italy’s cultural heritage and is visually linked to the symbol previously used by Banca Intesa. The serif font was inherited by the new brand from Sanpaolo IMI, ensuring a connection to the history and prestige of both financial institutions.

The Intesa Sanpaolo logo marked a new phase in the brand’s development, uniting heritage, culture, and banking tradition while maintaining a modern, internationally recognizable visual identity.
