In 2005, Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group and UFJ Holdings completed a merger. This created Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, with assets exceeding $ 1.7 trillion. In 2006, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ was established. It became Japan’s largest bank.
MUFG expanded its international presence. It acquired Union Bank of California and, in 2008, invested 9 billion dollars in Morgan Stanley. In 2013, the group acquired Thai bank Krungsri, strengthening its position in Southeast Asia.

2002 – 2005
In 2002, Japan’s financial sector welcomed a new market participant, the holding company “UFJ Holdings.” The group was formed following the merger of three major financial institutions: Sanwa Bank, Tokai Bank, and Toyo Trust & Banking.
Visually, UFJ Holdings presented the brand through a three-dimensional symbol and a text block. The main focus of the logo was on the ring-shaped figure. The symbol was created using yellow and golden-brown colors that blend smoothly into one another. The light and shadow of the ring create a three-dimensional effect. The upper part of the shape is thinner, while the lower part appears more massive, emphasizing the image’s depth and realism. Visually, the ring resembles a polished metal rim, illuminated from above and cast in a light shadow from below.
Next to the symbol is the inscription “UFJ,” set in a large, bold serif font. The dark burgundy text provides contrast to the symbol’s warm tones. The inscription typeface is similar in style to Times New Roman Bold, strict, and familiar to financial organizations.

2005 – 2014
Following the 2005 merger of the MTFG and UFJ Holdings banking groups, the financial market saw the emergence of a new giant, “Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group.” The company adopted the abbreviated name MUFG and unveiled a logo reflecting its business style.
Japanese designer Kazumasa Nagai created the new logo. The composition combines a symbol and a clean inscription. The symbol is positioned at the top and rendered in the brand’s signature “MUFG Red,” complemented by a white interior space. The shape consists of two symmetrical red semi-ovals facing each other, forming a single shape that visually resembles an apple’s contours. A bright red dot is placed in the center of the shape. The overall image is somewhat reminiscent of a target.
Below this element is the acronym MUFG, rendered in large, dark-gray capital letters. For the text, the designer used the sans-serif Univers font, which is clean and concise. The contrast between the bright red symbol and the understated gray typography underscores the group’s professional style.

2014 – today
The updated Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group logo retains the recognizability of the symbol designed by Kazumasa Nagai, but the typography and layout of the elements have changed. Now, the entire composition is arranged horizontally, and the text’s font has changed.
The symbol is positioned on the left and remains unchanged. The company’s official description emphasizes that these semicircular shapes represent interaction and expansion. The central part of the symbol reflects the joint efforts of the company itself and its clients. The semicircles underscore the company’s expansion within the Japanese market and beyond.
To the right of the logo is the inscription “MUFG,” rendered in the new Gotham font, a simple, clean sans serif. The letters are still rendered in the brand color MUFG Grey. The company states that the use of gray underscores the brand’s reliability, while red was chosen to express the responsibility, energy, and passion inherent in the financial group.
Kazumasa Nagai continued to oversee the artistic direction of the entire identity. Still, the switch to the Gotham typeface gave the brand a contemporary, business-oriented look befitting an international corporation.
