Soil conditions, crop development, and a farmer’s season’s outcome all begin with soil nutrition. Later-stage results depend on which fertilizers are applied and how they interact with the soil. The Nutrien logo represents a company that produces mineral fertilizers, plant nutrients, and related agricultural services, forming the foundation of the agricultural cycle. The name refers to the nutrients that underpin crop growth.

Nutrien: Brand overview

Nutrien was formed in 2018 from the merger of the Canadian companies Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan and Agrium. The merger combined the world’s largest potash producer and a leading supplier of agricultural chemicals.

Potash Corporation was established in 1975 by the government of Saskatchewan. The government created it to develop the world’s largest potash deposits. In 1989, the government privatized the company. After that, it expanded by acquiring producers of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers. By the mid-2000s, Potash Corp had become the world leader in potash production.

Agrium traces its history to 1931. The company began as a division of Cominco Fertilizers. In 1993, it became independent. In the 1990s and 2000s, Agrium built the largest retail network for supplying fertilizers and seeds. Its clients included farmers in North and South America as well as Australia.

In 2016, the companies announced a $36 billion merger. The process was completed in January 2018. The combined entity was named Nutrien. The headquarters was located in Saskatoon. After the merger, Nutrien managed production capacity of up to 20 million tons of potash per year. The company operated a network of about 1500 agricultural retail stores.

In 2019, production fell due to oversupply. In 2021, volumes increased again amid rising global fertilizer prices and supply disruptions from Eastern Europe. By the end of 2022, profit reached a record $7 billion.

In 2023, the market stabilized. Nutrien reduced extraction and focused on expanding its distribution network. In 2024, the company began expanding its retail network in Brazil and Australia.

The company remains the world’s largest potash producer. It is also a leader in nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer production. Nutrien operates manufacturing facilities in Canada, the United States, and South America. Nutrien serves farmers through a network of more than two thousand retail locations worldwide.

Nutrien was formed through the merger of 2 Canadian companies serving agriculture. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan mined potash and produced potash, nitrogen, and phosphate fertilizers. Agrium produced plant nutrients and operated an international agricultural retail network. The merger of equals was announced in September 2016. The future parent company needed a separate name and a shared visual identity.

The name search took about 4 months. Employees from both companies were invited to participate. An internal competition collected more than 4,000 suggestions, ranging from Abundantly to Zonterra. Two employees, one from Agrium and one from PotashCorp, proposed names closest to the final choice, Nutrien. They were rewarded with a trip to New York for the stock exchange opening-bell ceremony.

The name was derived from the English word “nutrient.” It linked the company to plant nutrition and suited its future product range. The shared brand brought together potash mining, fertilizer production, seeds, crop protection products, agronomic services, and retail supplies for farmers.

Nutrien unveiled its name and logo on June 21, 2017, several months before the transaction closed. The launch was accompanied by the phrase “Feeding the Future.” It connected plant nutrition with feeding a growing population. The merger took effect on January 1, 2018. The following day, Nutrien shares began trading on the Toronto and New York stock exchanges under the ticker NTR.

The shared name and green-and-black identity replaced PotashCorp and Agrium at the parent-company level. The logo represented the new organization while maintaining equal standing for the merger partners. A plant motif integrated into the name’s first letter conveyed the connection to their agricultural activities.

The uppercase “N” leans to the right and consists of a black base and green leaf-shaped sections. A large green shape crosses the left vertical stroke, curving toward the lower right edge. A second green section rises above the meeting point. Together, the leaves form the letter’s central diagonal.

A curved white line resembling a leaf vein runs between the green sections. It separates the overlapping shapes, making them resemble a young shoot. A light yellow-green shade at the top transitions to dark green at the bottom. The color gradient creates depth, while the black stroke maintains the geometry of the “N.” The plant image becomes part of the name and refers to growing crops.

The “N” is followed by black lowercase “utrien” lettering. The heavy sans-serif letters have rounded corners and share a rightward slant, continuing the direction of the first letter. A cohesive set of custom letterforms was developed for the name. The full-color version uses black and green. A single-color version preserves the outline of the stylized “N”. It is intended for printing with a limited number of inks. The phrase “Feeding the Future” was used separately to accompany the launch.

In the spring of 2018, the new name was extended to the retail business. The Nutrien Ag Solutions brand was introduced on April 4, and the transition began on July 1. It brought together more than 1,500 agricultural retail locations previously operating as Crop Production Services, Agroservicios Pampeanos, and Utilfertil.

The division’s logo retained the “N” with leaves. Nutrien appeared on the upper line, with “AG SOLUTIONS” set in small letters below. The addition explained the retail business’s purpose, while the shared lettering connected it to the parent company. Stores in North and South America adopted a unified identity, replacing their previous regional brands.
