The Origin logo is associated with a gaming platform that unified access to numerous games through a single account. It symbolizes convenience and quick launching, becoming a regular part of gamers’ digital lives.

Origin: Brand overview

The Origin platform’s history began in 2005 with Electronic Arts launch of EA Downloader. Initially, it was a client for downloading game expansions and games directly to PCs. It soon became EA Link, expanding its content to include trailers and demos. A year later, the platform split into the EA Store and EA Download Manager, separating purchasing and installation functions.

In June 2011, the brand was renamed Origin, referencing the Origin Systems studio acquired in 1992. Battlefield 3 was among the platform’s first exclusives. Later, the catalog included third-party projects from Capcom, Warner Bros., and THQ. In 2013, Origin became available on macOS and reached around 50 million users.

Later, Origin introduced Origin Access, a subscription service offering games from EA and other publishers. In 2019, Electronic Arts resumed collaboration with Steam, making many games available simultaneously on both platforms. In October 2022, Origin was replaced by the EA App, combining gaming and social functions. On April 17, 2025, Origin ceased operations entirely, transferring its audience to the EA App client.

What is Origin?

It is a digital platform for purchasing and launching PC games, serving as an alternative to well-known gaming stores. Its catalog includes games from its parent company as well as third-party developers, including exclusive series. Subscribers gain early access to new releases. The platform offers social features, cloud saves, and gameplay streaming.

2011 – 2022

Origin Logo 2011

The Origin logo, active from June 2011 until 2022, was introduced by Electronic Arts alongside the launch of its digital platform, intended to compete directly with Steam. The visual identity remained consistent throughout the brand’s existence and was used until Origin’s full integration into the new EA App platform.

The design consists of two main components, the symbol and the textual part. The symbol is shaped like a stylized orange vortex with a circular opening in the center. Its contours are smooth and asymmetrical, featuring slightly pointed tips at the top and bottom. The emblem combines the metaphors of a vortex, an energy hub, and a digital gateway, conveying the concept of a starting point and the flow of digitally accessible content.

The platform’s name, “Origin,” appears to the right of the symbol, set in a geometric sans-serif typeface created specifically for this logo. The font was hand-modified and stylistically resembles typefaces like Rounded Gothic. Its glyphs have soft, rounded shapes without serifs, with a distinctive detail in the cut-off upper tail of the letter “g” that visually echoes the symbol’s shape. The initial letter “O” intentionally mirrors the emblem on the left, strengthening the logo’s visual coherence.

An additional element, the slogan “Powered by EA,” is placed below the main inscription, rendered in a lighter, straightforward sans-serif typeface in a smaller size, highlighting the affiliation with Electronic Arts and reinforcing the digital service’s professional status.

The logo’s color palette consists of two shades: vibrant, saturated orange and neutral gray. Orange was deliberately chosen to symbolize dynamism, energy, and playful interaction, while gray conveys seriousness and reliability, emphasizing the platform’s professional and technological nature.

The brand identity development process was overseen by EA’s creative director, Christian McCarthy, although the specific studio responsible for the final logo design was never officially named. Despite the August 2020 announcement that the Origin brand would be phased out in favor of EA Desktop, the logo remained in active use until the full transition to the EA App in 2022.

During its lifetime, the Origin emblem became a symbol of Electronic Arts’ digital initiatives and a visual marker for the company’s gaming ecosystem, signifying a new era in digital game distribution services.

2020

The company presented a redesigned logo for its beta version. Changes affected colors, symbolism, and typography. Instead of muted orange, a bright coral shade appeared, highlighting the brand and emphasizing a contemporary, digitally oriented audience.

The style of the name also changed, with all-uppercase letters in a geometric font characterized by visual stability and uniformity. The letter “G” had a tail resembling a forward-pointing arrow, symbolizing the development of a platform.

The overall perception of the logo shifted toward a digital, modern aesthetic.

2020 – 2023

EA Logo 2020

Electronic Arts simplified its gaming service branding, replacing “Origin” with “EA” and supporting it with updated graphics. The familiar symbol was replaced by a bright coral-colored circle containing the recognizable company monogram.

This monogram consists of bold lines with angular cuts. Diagonal strokes create the clear shapes of the letters “E” and “A,” conveying modern digital aesthetics. The geometric rigor reflects the gaming platform’s technological style.

This visual update aimed to unify the brand and strengthen direct associations with Electronic Arts. Bright red symbolizes the company’s ambition in digital entertainment, while strict typography reinforces the service’s corporate character. This version was short-lived and was subsequently revised.

2023 – today

The latest redesign of the Origin logo reflects the company’s intention to emphasize the brand’s dynamic nature. The “EA” monogram appears against a vibrant gradient background, smoothly transitioning from rich orange to warm yellow. This color scheme gives the logo depth.

The black geometric monogram remained unchanged. The gradient colors surrounding it symbolize user gaming experiences on Electronic Arts’ platform. The gradient visually represents gamer emotions while interacting with the company’s digital projects. As a result, the logo acquired a more energetic and current appearance, suited to today’s gaming market.
