Telecommunications services include telephone, internet, and mobile plans that support everyday data transmission and communication. These systems support home, business, and digital services. The OTE logo is associated with the company that provides telecommunications and internet access services in Greece.

OTE: Brand overview

Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, or OTE, was founded in 1949 as a state-owned entity. It was created to rebuild Greece’s war-damaged telecommunications network. In the 1950s and 1960s, the company constructed telephone lines and submarine cables. This connected the islands to the mainland and supported tourism and economic growth.

In the 1970s, the company modernized its infrastructure, introducing digital switches and telex services. In 1992, the organization became a joint-stock company and began privatization. In 1996, it held an IPO on the Athens Stock Exchange. It sold 35 percent of its shares to private investors.

In 1998, Greece liberalized its telecommunications market, ending OTE’s monopoly. In 2001, the company launched the mobile operator Cosmote, which became a market leader. In 2003, the government sold an additional stake, reducing its ownership below 50 percent.

In 2008, Deutsche Telekom acquired a 20 percent stake for 2.5 billion euros. By 2011, the German company’s share exceeded 40 percent, making it the main shareholder. In 2009, the Greek debt crisis reduced revenues, but the company maintained stable operations.

By 2013, Deutsche Telekom’s stake reached 40 percent. The government reduced its holding to less than 10 percent. In 2014–2015, OTE invested in 4G network development and fiber-optic infrastructure. In 2017, the company expanded its presence in the Balkans and strengthened its position in Romania and Albania.

In 2019, OTE began 5G testing in Athens and Thessaloniki. In 2020, the rise in remote work and online education increased demand for internet services. This encouraged investments in network expansion. In 2021, OTE launched commercial 5G in the country’s largest cities.

In 2022, the company began replacing copper lines with fiber optics and introduced gigabit internet. In 2023, OTE expanded into cloud services, cybersecurity, and the Internet of Things. In 2024, it announced plans to invest several billion euros in Greece’s digital infrastructure. The program includes developing 5G networks, fiber optics, and data centers.

Deutsche Telekom controls the company and remains the country’s largest telecommunications operator. It serves millions of customers and plays a key role in Greece’s and the Balkans’ digital transformation.

Meaning and History

What is OTE?

The leading telecommunications operator in Greece combines fixed and mobile communications, internet, digital TV, and IT services under the Cosmote brand. The company is the industry’s largest employer and a major taxpayer. Having evolved from a state monopoly into a public corporation, it became part of Deutsche Telekom. Infrastructure and technology investments have strengthened its position in the domestic market and neighboring countries, including Romania. The operator has a well-established retail network and a wide range of services for private and corporate clients, holding a leading position in Southeastern Europe.

1926 – 1949

A telephone handset topped the circular emblem of AETE, OTE’s predecessor. In the 1930s, the Greek telephone company operated under the name Ανώνυμος Ελληνική Τηλεφωνική Εταιρεία, meaning “Greek Telephone Joint-Stock Company.” The initials formed the AETE monogram, which combined letterforms with the image of a handset.

A black circle enclosed a symmetrical pattern of interwoven lines. The curved top bar, with bent ends, resembled a telephone handset and formed the top of the “T.” On either side, 2 mirrored “E” letters overlapped the diagonal strokes of the “A.” Arcs crossed diagonals that reached toward the bottom of the circle, with short curved segments joining them at sharp angles. Consistent line widths brought the letters together into a single design.

The emblem appeared on public telephone equipment and telephone tokens. AETE tokens remained in use after OTE was established, until approximately 1953. Customers used them to pay for calls, keeping the former company’s monogram in everyday circulation under the new operator.

OTE was established in 1949 by consolidating Greece’s telephone services. The company was tasked with developing the national network. Its name, Οργανισμός Τηλεπικοινωνιών Ελλάδος, translates as “Telecommunications Organization of Greece.” The abbreviation comes from the initial letters of Organismos, Tilepikoinonion, and Ellados. The English name, Hellenic Telecommunications Organization, conveys the meaning of the Greek name and is used alongside OTE. “S.A.” identifies the company as a joint-stock corporation.

1950 – 1969

After OTE was established in 1949, 3 separate letters, ΟΤΕ, replaced the interwoven monogram. The black lettering sat inside a thin circle, with open space between the letters and the border. The sans-serif capitals used strokes of equal thickness.

The “Τ,” with its long vertical stem and horizontal crossbar, rose above the neighboring letters. Narrow, elongated “Ο” and “Ε” letters stood on either side. The nearly vertical sides of the “Ο” curved at the top and bottom, giving it a rectangle with rounded corners. The outer contour of the “Ε” combined narrow proportions with rounded forms.

In the 1950s, the OTE name began appearing on telephone booths and tokens. Its presence on equipment and on the tokens used to pay for calls brought the new name into everyday use, gradually replacing the previous operator’s name.

1969 – 2015

In 1969, a horizontal oval replaced the circular border of the OTE logo. Inside it, tightly spaced sans-serif capitals formed the name. The border varied in thickness, with heavier sections at the top and bottom and narrower sides. The letters and border shared the same blue or light blue shade, while the interior remained white.

All 3 letters, ΟΤΕ, now had the same height. Wider forms replaced the narrow, elongated lettering. The “Ο” became nearly circular, and the “Τ” acquired a heavy horizontal crossbar. The rounded “Ε” resembled “Є,” with an open right side and a short middle stroke. Its curve echoed the rounded first letter, with the angular “Τ” between them.

The lettering inside the oval remained in place for decades. Minor adjustments mainly involved the shade of blue.

2015 – 2026

OTE Logo

When the company brought services together in 2015, OTE and COSMOTE took on different roles. Customers received fixed-line and mobile services, along with internet access, under the COSMOTE brand. The transition included new signage and unified customer offerings. OTE remained the company’s name, and its blue logo continued to appear in corporate materials.

The OTE Group version added the Greek line ΟΜΙΛΟΣ ΕΤΑΙΡΕΙΩΝ, meaning “Group of Companies.” The wording identified the emblem with the group and its parent company, Hellenic Telecommunications Organization S.A. The update coincided with consolidating consumer services under a shared brand.

The logo retained its 3 large capital letters inside a horizontal oval. A circular “O” sits beside a heavy “T” and a rounded “E” resembling “Є.” The corners of the “T” crossbar and the ends of the “E” are softened. The lettering uses a bold sans-serif style. The blue border is thinner than the letters, with heavier top and bottom sections and narrower sides.

Beneath the oval, ΟΜΙΛΟΣ ΕΤΑΙΡΕΙΩΝ appears in the same blue. The sans-serif capitals have consistent stroke widths. The lower line adds the group designation to the retained OTE emblem.

2026 – today

Hellenic Telekom Logo

A magenta “T” on OTE’s Athens headquarters marked the Greek group’s transition to the Telekom name. Beginning in September 2026, the serif letter, flanked by 2 squares, became the primary emblem in its public branding. The corporate name Hellenic Telecommunications Organization S.A. and the abbreviation OTE remained.

The transition followed the introduction of the COSMOTE TELEKOM brand in April 2025. The combined name joined Greece’s COSMOTE with Deutsche Telekom’s international brand. The magenta “T” was already part of the branding, accompanied by the phrase “Connecting your world.” The tagline remained after the public-facing name was shortened to Telekom.

The update extended to the group’s stores, websites, apps, and services. COSMOTE 5G became Telekom 5G, while COSMOTE Fiber became Telekom Fiber. The shared name and emblem continued to integrate the Greek business with Deutsche Telekom’s international brand.
