Hexagon AB was founded in 1992 in Sweden. The initiative came from entrepreneur Melker Schörling, who united manufacturers of surveying equipment. In 1997, the company acquired the Swiss firm Leica Geosystems, becoming one of the leaders in laser scanning and GPS technologies.
In the 2000s, the company focused on developing metrology and automation. In 2001, the American company Brown and Sharpe joined the group. Later, the Italian company DEA, specializing in quality control systems for industry, was also added to the group.
In 2010, Hexagon acquired the American company Intergraph for $ 2.13 billion. From 2014 to 2017, it acquired Veripos, MSC Software, and AutonomouStuff. These deals expanded the company’s expertise in engineering modeling, satellite positioning, and autonomous technologies.
In 2019, the Canadian company Blast Movement Technologies joined the group. In 2021, the company acquired Infor EAM, strengthening its asset management segment. In 2022, Hexagon introduced predictive maintenance solutions under the R Evolution brand.

What is Hexagon AB?
A Swedish technology group and a leader in solutions for precision measurement, 3D modeling, and asset management. It brings together more than 35 brands in geospatial measurement, metrology, and engineering software. Its technologies are used in construction, mechanical engineering, energy, transportation, and defense. The company has grown through acquisitions, including ERDAS, Jovix, and the EAM division of Infor, and employs about 18,000 people in 50 countries.
2000s – today
The Hexagon name entered the company’s history long before its shift to measurement technologies. Eken Industri och Handel AB was registered in Stockholm in September 1975. The business merged with its parent company, Investment AB Eken, in 1987. After acquiring assets from shareholders of Hexagon Aktiebolag in October 1993, the company received the legal name Hexagon AB. Some reference sources cite 1992, while the corporate timeline gives 1993.
The English word “hexagon” refers to a six-sided polygon. The name came from Hexagon Aktiebolag, which participated in the reorganization. The geometric meaning later became the basis of the group’s emblem.
Melker Schörling entered Hexagon’s history in 1998. He acquired Konverta AB, which owned Hexagon Class A shares, and became the principal shareholder. The 1998 annual report confirms the change in ownership. At the time, the group was an industrial conglomerate. It included manufacturers of hydraulic systems, metal products, rubber components, food ingredients, packaging, and telecommunications equipment.
Ola Rollén became CEO in 2000. Under his leadership, Hexagon focused on measurement technologies. The group sold assets from its former industries and acquired Brown & Sharpe, Leica Geosystems, NovAtel, and Intergraph. By 2011, its portfolio covered measurement equipment, geospatial data, manufacturing systems, and software technologies.
The new logo was introduced in June 2011 at Hexagon’s first international conference. Ola Rollén presented it during the opening address. The unified identity connected numerous businesses and engineering fields while preserving the established names of subsidiaries.
An emblem made of four intersecting polygonal planes appears to the left of the name. Their shapes resemble triangles of different sizes. Dark blue, light blue, and light green sections form a Latin letter “H,” the first letter of Hexagon. The surfaces face different directions and create a three-dimensional, crystal-like figure. The polygonal construction refers to the hexagon in the company name.
Dark blue occupies the large surface, light blue appears on adjacent planes, and light green is added to one section. The colored areas make the letter “H” visible within the multifaceted form. The emblem can appear independently while preserving a connection with the full name.
The black word HEXAGON appears on the right. The uppercase letters use a sans-serif typeface with uniform stroke widths. The name and emblem appear on one line and occupy comparable space within the logo.
Following the update, the emblem became part of the identities of group companies and divisions. Leica Geosystems, Intergraph, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence, and Hexagon Geosystems retained their product names while being connected to Hexagon. Intergraph Government Solutions became Hexagon US Federal in 2017 and adopted the shared corporate identity.
