The Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades emerged in the late 1980s during the First Intifada. They were formally established in 1991 as Hamas’s armed wing. The group was named after Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, a Syrian cleric and anti-British activist active in Palestine during the 1930s. Its early operations targeted Israeli soldiers and settlers through ambushes and improvised explosives.
During the Second Intifada, beginning in 2000, the brigades expanded their activity and began launching Qassam rockets from Gaza. Their range and destructive capacity increased over time. After the 2006 Palestinian legislative election and the 2007 takeover of Gaza, the organization became the territory’s main armed force amid conflict with Fatah.
The brigades fought Israel during operations Cast Lead in 2008-2009, Pillar of Defense in 2012, and Protective Edge in 2014. Their methods later included tunnel attacks, drones, larger rocket arsenals, urban combat, sabotage missions, and expanded training and recruitment in Gaza. In 2021, they launched heavy rocket barrages toward Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv.
In 2024, the group claimed M90 rocket launches toward Tel Aviv and responsibility for an attack in Jaffa that killed seven people and injured seventeen. The killing of Yahya Sinwar by Israeli forces later that year weakened its leadership. The logo of the Qassam Brigades depicts the Dome of the Rock, the main sanctuary of Islam, located in Jerusalem. It is semicircular because it was created in the Byzantine style, resembling the domes of palaces and churches with a mosaic structure. This is indicated not only by architectural features but also by the square plates divided by golden stripes.
In the background of the sacred object, a militant figure is shown wearing an Arab keffiyeh that completely covers the face. Only the eyes, filled with hatred and threat, remain visible. The weapon raised in the warrior’s right hand indicates his malicious intentions. The weapon is placed in the foreground, highlighting the intent for terror.
