Professional baseball in Sacramento began with the Solons, a founding Pacific Coast League club in 1903. Renamed the Sacramento River Cats, the club opened Raley Field beside the Sacramento River in 2000. It led the league in attendance for nine seasons, drawing over 900,000 spectators in 2001. During a 15-year affiliation with the Oakland Athletics, Sacramento won six straight division titles, 11 of its first 12 division crowns, and consecutive Triple-A national championships in 2007 and 2008. Barry Zito and Tim Hudson developed in Sacramento before reaching the majors.
The River Cats joined the San Francisco Giants system in 2015 and led the minor leagues with 672,354 visitors that year. Forbes valued the club at $40 million in 2014. In 2019, they captured a fifth PCL championship and a third national title. Art Savage died in 2009, after which his wife Susan inherited the club. Vivek Ranadivé, owner of the Sacramento Kings, acquired a controlling stake in 2022, while the Savage family remained involved.
Since 2025, Sutter Health Park has served as the temporary home of MLB’s Oakland club while a permanent stadium is built in Las Vegas. The arrangement places a major-league team in the same venue as its former farm affiliate.

Brandiose, a San Diego-based design team, unveiled the new version of the Sacramento River Cats’ identity. The main objective was to rework the familiar image of the team’s mascot, a wild cat. The studio aimed to strengthen the competitive intensity characteristic of baseball through this image. By moving the predator to the center of the composition, the designers emphasized its attacking stance and physical power.
The character grew larger, and the figure’s contours gained mass, highlighting the tension and strength of its movements. The wild cat is depicted with its mouth open and teeth bared, demonstrating its mindset before a decisive throw. The cat firmly holds a baseball in its raised paw, with its claws extended.
The club name is set in italics and slanted, placed below the image. The calligraphic typeface, with its smooth lines, visually complements the character’s dynamism. The word Sacramento is set above in a simple sans-serif typeface, adding clarity.
The color palette retained the combination of burgundy, black, and golden beige shades. The colors gained additional depth and richness. Gradients and shadows applied to the fur and claws enhance the visual perception of volume.
