The Branch Museum of Design Unveils New Logo and Brand Identity

The Branch Museum of Design Logo New

The Branch Museum of Design in Virginia has introduced an updated style, defining its position among the region’s cultural institutions. The previous mark fell short of the building’s architecture and did not convey the space’s scale, so a change in visual identity became an expected next step in development.

The new style was developed by the studio MullenLowe. The logo is based on the museum’s original architectural drawings. Three pointed gables come together to form a relief letter B, combining architectural precision with creative thinking. When rotated, the mark turns into the silhouette of a house, echoing the museum’s location in a historic Tudor-era mansion.

The shift of the logo away from a conventional axis became a deliberate device to change the point of perception. This approach aligns with the museum’s mission to rethink established views of design and the cultural environment.

The new mark is supported by a modular design system that extends to wayfinding, printed materials, merchandise, and other applications. Rigid limits do not constrain the color system, allowing the visual style to be adapted to specific exhibitions or author-driven projects.

A separate direction involved collaboration with the Brazilian music duo Evil Twin. This joint effort led to the creation of the museum’s theme song. Repeating architectural motifs of The Branch were translated into a rhythmic structure, giving the visual identity an auditory extension.

Several logo variations in the new identity feature tree-branch imagery that resonates with the museum’s name and adds associative depth. As a result, the Branch has developed a cohesive, distinctive visual style that naturally complements the museum’s design and its setting within an architectural landmark.
