The Fralin Museum of Art at the University of Virginia has introduced a new identity. The changes are designed to make the museum more accessible to the broader public and underscore its significance in the cultural life of Charlottesville.
The museum’s collection comprises over 14,000 works, spanning from ancient artifacts and icons to contemporary art. Despite its extensive holdings, the museum was perceived primarily as an academic space focused on the university community for many years. The new identity is intended to change that image and show that the museum is ready to serve as a place of engagement for all visitors.
The previous logo featured the silhouette of the building, emphasizing its connection to the university. It was strict and formal, but did not convey the diversity of the collection or the atmosphere. The new mark, created by the studio Familiar Creatures, is built on bright colors and dynamic shapes. The logo is no longer tied to architecture, but instead expresses the energy of contemporary art and the museum’s desire to connect more closely with its audience.
At the center of communication is the slogan “Art Together.” It emphasizes the idea of accessibility: the museum’s collection should not be viewed as an unattainable assembly of masterpieces, but rather as a space for shared experiences and enjoyment.
Before the update, a study was conducted involving museum staff, city residents, students, and university faculty. The result was an understanding that visitors expect a more open and welcoming image.
Familiar Creatures developed a graphic system that includes an expanded color palette and bold typography. The visual language is adaptable for various formats, including social media, posters, brochures, exhibition spaces, and educational programs.
The museum also received a toolkit for staff and curators. It includes guidelines for exhibition design, recommendations for communication style, and ready-made templates for publications.
The full transition to the new style is planned for the museum’s 90th anniversary in 2025. By then, the updated identity will cover all areas of activity, including the website, printed materials, and gallery design.
The new style reflects the Fralin Museum’s role as a cultural center for both the city and the university. It transforms the museum into a space where art becomes part of a dialogue between people, bringing together different generations and communities.
