Thessaloniki Metro Unveils New Logo and Brand Identity

Metro Logo

Thessaloniki Metro has introduced its new logo, marking an important moment in the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance urban mobility. Unveiled in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure’s presence, the logo combines Thessaloniki’s historical identity with its vision for modern transportation.

At the center of the design is the lowercase Greek letter “μ,” which connects directly to the Greek word for metro (μετρό). This symbol carries cultural significance while representing movement and connection—two ideas central to the role of a metro system. The letter is styled with smooth, flowing lines, giving it a dynamic feel that mirrors the flow of people and the seamless travel experience the Thessaloniki Metro aims to provide.

Surrounding the “μ” is a bold, continuous line forming an incomplete circle. This design choice does more than frame the central symbol—it evokes the image of metro tunnels, highlighting the system’s underground nature. The intentional gap in the circle suggests openness and growth, hinting at the system’s potential to expand beyond its current form. The circular shape adds stability and continuity, which are important for public transportation services.

Metro Emblem

Below the graphic element, the word “METRO” appears in a clean, sans-serif typeface. The typography is straightforward and modern, designed for easy readability in various contexts, from station signs to digital platforms. The sharp, geometric lines of the letters contrast the softer curves of the “μ,” creating a balanced look. Using English ensures the logo is accessible to residents and international visitors, reinforcing Thessaloniki’s status as a global city.

The deep navy blue color palette was chosen because it is associated with reliability, professionalism, and trust. This strong, solid color reflects the metro’s emphasis on safety and efficiency while subtly referencing Greece’s maritime heritage. The monochromatic scheme keeps the design simple and versatile, making it suitable for use across various formats, including signage, maps, vehicles, and marketing materials.

Simplicity is a key feature of the logo’s design. The minimalist approach avoids unnecessary details, focusing on strong, recognizable shapes that are easily identifiable—a practical consideration for busy transit environments. The logo’s clean lines and clear structure support wayfinding, helping passengers easily navigate the metro system.

Metro Symbol

The logo is unveiled as Thessaloniki prepares to open its metro system in just 17 days, a milestone that will reshape public transportation in the city. The new metro is expected to improve daily commutes, reduce traffic congestion, and support more sustainable urban travel.

Coinciding with the logo reveal, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced a reduction in fares for Thessaloniki’s urban transport network. Ticket prices will decrease from 90 cents to 60 cents, an initiative designed to make public transportation more affordable and encourage greater use of the system alongside the launch of the metro.

The new Thessaloniki Metro logo represents a city rooted in history yet looking ahead to the future. Its design is both practical and symbolic, capturing the spirit of a city embracing modern infrastructure while honoring its cultural heritage.
