The University of North Texas (UNT) was founded on September 16, 1890, in Denton as Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute by educator and entrepreneur Joshua C. Chilton. The first classes took place above B. J. Wilson’s hardware store, with 70 students attending the opening day. The school received its state charter in 1891 and later moved to a permanent campus supported by local citizens.
The institution developed through several stages, becoming North Texas Normal College in 1893, North Texas State Teachers College in 1923, North Texas State College in 1949, and North Texas State University in 1961. The college adopted its current name, University of North Texas, in 1988. By 1913, enrollment exceeded 1,000 students, and the college expanded its academic programs, library, and athletics.
Music became one of UNT’s notable fields. The College of Music received accreditation in 1939, and in 1947 the university introduced the world’s first jazz degree program. The One O’Clock Lab Band became a symbol of the program, earning Grammy nominations and performing internationally. Among UNT music alumni are artists such as Norah Jones.
UNT also developed a major athletic identity. In 1956, it became one of the first universities in the Southwest Conference to integrate African American student-athletes. The Mean Green nickname appeared in 1966 and became linked with football player Joe Greene, later an NFL Hall of Fame member. The teams compete in NCAA Division I, moved to Apogee Stadium in 2011, and joined the American Athletic Conference in 2023.

The UNT logo begins with the image of a diving hawk whose wings seamlessly transform into the first letter of the university’s abbreviation. This organic unity of symbol and text reflects the university’s spirit from Denton, a prominent research center in North Texas whose character is associated with energy and forward momentum.
The image of the bird is stylized. Parallel lines forming the wings convey strength, speed, and readiness for action, visually emphasizing swift downward movement toward a goal. The beak is open, and the claws extend forward and downward as if the hawk targets prey. The symbol connects with the uppercase letter “U,” becoming its natural continuation. This visual link symbolizes the cohesion, unity, and integration characteristic of the university, which actively combines various areas of science and practice.
The large letters “UNT” on the upper level are rendered in a bold slab serif font. Serifs lend the font a strict, academic, and authoritative appearance. Under the prominent abbreviation is the full university name “UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS,” presented in a thin sans-serif font, divided into two lines. This arrangement gives the logo a systematic look.
The primary color of the logo is green. In the university context, green carries dual meaning: on the one hand, it reflects the regional identity of North Texas, known for abundant nature and vegetation; on the other, it symbolizes growth, development, and progress, central themes of the university’s research and educational programs aimed at achieving new results.
The Seal
1890 – today
The University of North Texas seal is executed in a traditional style, emphasizing its connection to the university’s rich history dating back to 1890. The central image of the seal is a five-pointed star enclosed within two concentric circles. The star is perceived as a symbol of unity and leadership, qualities inherently tied to the university’s activities.
The university’s full name, “UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS,” is neatly arranged around the star. Small dots placed between words give the inscription rhythm and balance. The text uses a classic and formal serif typeface.
Externally, the seal appears almost circular, although its shape is created not by a border but by a laurel wreath surrounding the central section. The wreath begins at the bottom with a ribbon displaying the university’s founding date, “1890.” The wreath symbolizes success and achievement, reflecting the university’s reputation as a center for research and knowledge.
A classical lamp of knowledge rests upon a book at the top of the seal. These symbols of education and wisdom are connected to the direction and meaning of the university’s mission, which focuses on the transfer and accumulation of knowledge.
