The Barcelona City Council has unveiled an updated design for the city emblem, the first redesign in 15 years. The update aims to foster a more open dialogue with residents, without unnecessary distance or overly complex symbols. The focus is placed on the city itself and its coat of arms, freed from the previous enclosed form and visual constraints.
The former emblem was well recognized, but it lacked the inner energy and mood associated with Barcelona. The new mark removes the frame, giving the coat of arms and the name more space and flexibility. Instead of the full official name, Ajuntament de Barcelona, the abbreviation “Barcelona” is used. To avoid overlap with tourist imagery, the city chose a strict and memorable typeface created by the studio Statement. It draws on Antique Olive’s traditions, combining restraint with a strong individual character.
A key feature of the new approach is the interaction between the coat of arms and the text. The shortened logo version with the letter B and the coat of arms looks fresh and cohesive. Details of the emblem, including dots and bowls, are carefully integrated into the letterform.
The color system has also been developed further. The classic red is complemented by a rich mint green, creating contrast and highlighting the city’s distinct identity. Brush strokes and typographic treatment demonstrate a wide stylistic range and the system’s ability to support lively urban communication.
The new identity reflects Barcelona’s desire to be closer to its residents. While maintaining official status and authority, the style feels lively and organic, conveying the spirit of one of Europe’s most compelling cities.
