Big 12 Conference: Brand overview

The history of the Big 12 began on February 25, 1994, following the merger of the Big Eight Conference with four universities from the Southwest Conference. The new league officially began operations on July 1, 1996, including Baylor University, the University of Texas, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech University.

Before the formation of the Big 12, there was the Big Eight Conference, created in 1964, consisting of Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State. From its early years, the Big 12 gained recognition for football and basketball.

2010-2011, Colorado and Nebraska left the league to join the Pac-12 and Big Ten, respectively. 2012 Missouri and Texas A&M also departed, replaced by West Virginia and TCU.

Following the decision by Texas and Oklahoma to join the SEC in 2021, the Big 12 added Houston, Cincinnati, UCF, and BYU. By 2023, the Big 12 remains an influential NCAA conference, regularly sending teams to the NCAA March Madness tournament and competing for leading positions in college football.

What is the Big 12 Conference?

The NCAA Division I Football Association is an association of colleges in the central and southern parts of the United States that play in NCAA Division I sports. Football teams play a “round-robin” schedule, allowing them to face each other throughout the season.

1996 – 2004

A logo was developed to reflect the conference’s initial composition at its founding. The name is tied to the number of the first participants, 12. The emblem is designed as a gray Roman numeral, with a small red inscription in the center displaying the full name of the union.

The Roman numeral’s size emphasizes the conference’s high standards and highlights the top representatives who participated in it. The color combination underscores key aspects: gray represents hard and enduring work, while red is associated with achievements, awards, and well-earned victories.

2004 – 2014

In 2004, the logo acquired a premium and prestigious appearance. 12 is three-dimensional, symbolizing progress, the teams’ professional growth, and sports successes.

The union demonstrated confidence by participating in the Bowl Championship Series and other significant competitions, strengthening its standing within the NCAA.

The design reflects these achievements through a red ribbon. At the center of the image, the white name of the conference is displayed on the ribbon, adding emphasis and completeness to the composition.

2014 – 2018

After the reorganization conducted between 2010 and 2013, the conference logo was updated to reflect changes in membership. The number “12” acquired an elegant appearance through the curved lines of its top and bottom bars. Pure white conveys renewal and the strengthening of the lineup with the addition of new teams.

The transformations did not affect the quality of play, as evidenced by the coaches’ experience and organizers’ professionalism. A maroon background highlights this aspect, adding visual depth and emphasis.

The tagline was moved below the image, giving the logo a finished look. The main part of the text is rendered in maroon, creating a visual connection with other elements. The “Conference” is highlighted in silver, emphasizing the union’s high status.

The union’s achievements in 2014 solidified its position: two teams ranked among the top six in the College Football Playoff rankings, showcasing its participants’ high level of play and competitiveness.
