The BMO US logo symbolizes the Canadian bank’s adaptation to the US market. It reflects the reliability and business-oriented strictness of a financial institution trusted for its stability and professionalism.

BMO US: Brand overview

BMO’s presence in the US market dates back to 1818, with the opening of the Bank of Montreal’s New York office. In 1861, the bank established itself in Chicago, becoming part of the local financial scene. The modern BMO brand in the US was formed from Harris Bank, which began in 1882 as a municipal bond brokerage and was acquired by Canadians for $547 million in 1984. Harris Bank’s symbol was the popular lion, Hubert.

Following Harris Bank’s acquisition, BMO actively expanded by purchasing several local banks, including First National Bank of Barrington and State Bank of St. Charles. In 1994, Harris Bankcorp merged with Suburban Bancorp. A significant event was the acquisition of Marshall & Ilsley in 2011, after which BMO Harris Bank became one of the largest banks in the Midwest.

The biggest step was acquiring Bank of the West from BNP Paribas in 2023 for $16.3 billion, which positioned BMO among North America’s top 10 banks by assets and established a substantial presence in California and other states. In September 2023, the bank discontinued the BMO Harris brand and adopted the global name BMO Bank of Montreal N.A.

Today, BMO is a major bank headquartered in Toronto, with over 600 branches, and ranks second in market share there, behind RBC.

2011 – 2023

BMO Harris Bank Logo 2011

When the BMO Harris Bank logo debuted in 2011, its design emphasized tradition and reliability, highlighting the financial organization’s longstanding reputation. The bank introduced symbolism that combined modern banking standards with the historical heritage of one of Canada’s oldest banks, the Bank of Montreal.

The symbolism is visually divided into two parts. On the left is the abbreviation BMO, and on the right is the more reserved name Harris Bank. Both parts are set in the same typeface, a classic, neat, thin-serif typeface. The font has a calm character.

The light blue tone of the text is associated with transparency, professionalism, and trust in financial institutions.

At the center of the composition is a red circle, the bank’s key symbol. Inside the circle, a white mark appears, resembling a stylized letter M whose silhouette recalls mountain peaks. Many also interpret the letter as a crown, symbolizing the bank’s prestige and status. The red-and-white combination refers to the Bank of Montreal’s historical roots as Canada’s oldest financial institution.

The BMO abbreviation is larger and brighter, underscoring its primary role in the brand hierarchy. The name Harris Bank, in a smaller font, signals its place within the corporate family.

As a result, BMO Harris Bank gained a logo that joins strong banking traditions with the simplicity and clarity of modern design principles. The symbolism conveys the character of a financial institution built on stability, transparency, and long experience.

2023 – today

BMO US Logo

Since early 2023, BMO’s US division has adopted new branding focused on simplicity and global recognition. The name Harris Bank was dropped, leaving the compact, confident abbreviation BMO, which became the unified name for all the bank’s divisions across different countries.

The main symbol remains the large red circle with the white image inside. The core of the composition remained unchanged, preserving historical continuity and the bank’s longstanding reputation.

The abbreviation BMO is placed to the left of the circle and set in a serif typeface. The letters are large, clear, and readable. The type’s color remains the same, a calm blue associated with professional reputation, transparency, and stability.

The only major change is the red symbol’s larger size relative to the letters, which emphasizes its importance and central role in shaping the brand’s perception. With the removal of the regional name “Harris Bank,” the logo gained international recognition.

The brand received a strong, simple logo that reflects its global ambitions and long traditions in the banking industry.
