The Brotherhood of Steel logo is associated with dominance over surviving technology. In a harsh world where the past has crumbled into ruins, their armor and weapons serve as a reminder of order amidst chaos. Where winds carry the ashes of fallen cities, this order marches forward, reclaiming what was once the pinnacle of human progress.
Brotherhood of Steel: Brand overview
In the Fallout video game series, the Brotherhood of Steel originated in 2076, when Captain Roger Maxson discovered secret U.S. military experiments involving the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). Rejecting these unethical practices, Maxson’s troops abandoned their posts.
After nuclear war devastated civilization on October 23, 2077, the survivors, led by Maxson, settled in a bunker at Lost Hills, California. Here, in isolation, they formally founded the Brotherhood with the mission to preserve pre-war technology and prevent future disasters. By 2134, the organization structured itself into military-style ranks: Paladins for combat, Knights for technical roles, and Scribes for knowledge preservation.
In the 2150s, expansion began beyond California, establishing new chapters, including the influential Midwestern branch. By 2161, during the original Fallout game, they played a critical role in stopping the Master and his super mutant army. The Midwestern division later gained prominence in 2197 by adopting inclusive policies toward outsiders, which contrasted sharply with those of its Western counterparts.
By 2277, the Eastern chapter, led by Elder Lyons, focused on civilian protection in Washington, DC, diverging from the Brotherhood’s traditional isolationism. This direction shifted again in 2287 during Fallout 4, when Elder Maxson reinstated aggressive military practices in the Commonwealth region.
In Fallout 76 (set in 2102), early attempts to expand into Appalachia highlight the initial struggles to establish broader influence. Throughout the series, regional chapters differ in their methods and ideologies, but they consistently pursue technological dominance and control.
Meaning and History
What is Brotherhood of Steel?
This is a militarized group dedicated to preserving and controlling pre-war technology in a world devastated by nuclear catastrophe. It is known for its strict hierarchy, resembling medieval knightly orders, and the use of powerful power armor. Members hold various ranks from scribes who study past knowledge to knights and paladins who ensure security and carry out missions. In the post-apocalyptic world, they establish fortified bases and bunkers, collecting and researching technological artifacts, which they believe are key to rebuilding civilization.
1997 – 2024
The visual symbolism of the Brotherhood of Steel was created by the artists of Interplay and Black Isle Studios under the direction of Leonard Boyarsky. It became a reflection of the faction’s ideology. The emblem combined military heraldry and industrial aesthetics, which fit naturally into the retrofuturist atmosphere and the post-apocalyptic setting of Fallout. They made it possible to designate the main values of the Brotherhood, among which are the cult of technology and reliance on strength.
The composition is built on symmetry. The vertical axis is defined by an upward-pointing sword, which is perceived as a sign of power and control. Its strict form and minimalist guard are reminiscent of military functionality. Behind the blade are three cogwheels of different sizes. Their asymmetrical placement and pronounced teeth symbolize the Brotherhood’s interest in engineering developments and pre-war technology.
The outline is completed with wings stylized in the traditional heraldic style. They unite the sword and the gears into a single composition, forming a circle and reinforcing the connection with military symbols of the past. The wings also serve a semantic purpose, denoting the faction’s aspiration to guard order and preserve knowledge.
The Brotherhood of Steel emblem is made in a monochrome palette. The black-and-white design emphasizes severity and seriousness, and the absence of color transitions reinforces the impression of strict discipline. Minimalism reflects the uncompromising nature of the Brotherhood of Steel and its ideology of technological superiority.
Over time, after the franchise rights were transferred to Bethesda, this version was replaced by a new one. Nevertheless, the original logo remained in the classic editions of Fallout and continues to be associated with the series ‘early years.
