The Corpus Christi Hooks baseball club logo emphasizes regional identity and the team’s affiliation with baseball. Its symbolism expresses the club’s connection to the coastal region and its culture.
The Corpus Christi Hooks baseball team began in 2005, when a Double-A franchise relocated from Round Rock, Texas, to Corpus Christi, Texas. The team was owned by Ryan-Sanders Baseball, which was headed by Nolan Ryan and his son, Reid.
The name “Hooks,” chosen through a local contest, reflects the city’s fishing culture and Nolan Ryan’s famous “hook” pitch. Team colors featured nautical themes, including white, red, and blue. The mascots became Sammy the Seagull and Rusty Hook.
Home games are held at Whataburger Field, which opened in April 2005 on the site of former cotton warehouses. In their second season (2006), Hooks won the Texas League championship. Notably, Houston Astros pitcher Roger Clemens played for the Hooks before returning to MLB that year.
The team developed Astros stars like Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, and George Springer.
In 2015, the Astros assumed full ownership of the team, further emphasizing the importance of player development. In 2025, Hooks celebrated their 20th anniversary by updating their brand, including new uniforms and a logo inspired by Texas’s heritage.
Meaning and History
What is Corpus Christi Hooks?
It is a Double-A baseball team based in Corpus Christi, Texas, competing in the Texas League as an affiliate of the Houston Astros. The team’s name references the local fishing tradition along the Gulf Coast. Home games are played at Whataburger Field, built on the site of a former warehouse in the city’s port district.
2005 – 2024
The Corpus Christi Hooks logo, used since 2005, was created after the franchise relocated to Texas and commissioned by Studio Simon. The concept was developed by Dan Simon, who received an initial sketch from club management depicting an anthropomorphic fishing hook. During the design process, the artist focused on combining a maritime theme, baseball tradition, and local symbolism.
The word “Hooks” is styled in dynamic lettering resembling a calligraphic script. Wide strokes and smooth curves create a sense of motion, and the round shape of the two “o” letters is turned into loops from which stylized fishing hooks hang. The top crossbar of the “H” extends into a horizontal underline that represents a fishing rod or a wave-shaped pier, from which curved metallic forms hang down. The detailing has several layers: a dark navy border, a white inner outline, and silvery-blue shades on the hooks, creating a sense of depth and a metallic sheen.
Above the composition is a red banner resembling the Texas state flag: the left side features a white five-pointed star on a blue field, and the right side contains the white words “Corpus Christi” on a red background. This design emphasizes regional identity and connects the club to the coastal port on the Gulf of Mexico. The palette combines deep navy and light blue, metaphorically evoking the ocean and the sky. Silver accents in the hooks reinforce the association with fishing gear, while the red banner elements add contrast and energy.
The hook motif is a direct reference to the team name and serves as a visual metaphor: the double hooks form the monogram “CC” (Corpus Christi) and echo the motion of a “hook” swing in baseball, tying the wordplay to the sport. The club’s branding also features an alternate cap emblem, a circular mark that incorporates a silver hook and a baseball bat, complementing the primary identity system.
The composition balances expressive lettering, allusions to the fishing industry, and state symbolism, forming a distinctive, emotionally charged image that unites the city, fans, and its sporting tradition.
2025 – today
The Corpus Christi Hooks logo, adopted in 2025, was developed by Studio Simon as part of a complete brand identity refresh. The concept was introduced in January 2024 under the direction of the Houston Astros ownership and the Hooks’ in-house marketing team.
The design is built around a monumental, dome-shaped silhouette inspired by the Harbor Bridge arch and the facade of Whataburger Field. The dome is rendered in a deep navy blue with a thin light blue outline. The upper section is decorated with ten white five-pointed stars, representing the cities and communities surrounding Corpus Christi.
At the top is the outline of the state of Texas in light blue, with a stylized white fishing hook marking the southern coastline. A red star marks the exact location of Corpus Christi, underscoring its significance.
The center of the composition features the words “Corpus Christi” in uppercase, white, sans-serif letters in a clean, geometric style. Below is the team name “HOOKS” in a custom block typeface, featuring massive, hexagonal-shaped letters and geometric cuts. This typographic choice draws from baseball design traditions, adding athletic strength and energy.
The lower part of the composition features five light-blue arch elements, stylized to resemble the architectural features of the city’s port structures and hangar shapes, highlighting the club’s proximity to the coast and its historical ties to the water.
The brand’s color palette revolves around the team’s traditional navy blue and light blue, complemented by white and an accent red, underscoring regional identity and referencing the official colors of the Texas state flag.
The launch of the new logo was part of the “Next Chapter for the Bayfront Ballclub” campaign, supported by extensive media coverage, including promotional videos, branded merchandise collections, and advertising materials.
Font and Colors
The current Corpus Christi Hooks logo features a saturated color palette, with deep navy blue and light blue dominating, complemented by clean white and accent red. Navy blue serves as the solid foundation, evoking the sea and the team’s authority. Light blue in the outlines and lower arches adds a sense of openness and reinforces the region’s maritime nature. White highlights the lettering and symbols for maximum clarity and legibility, even at a distance. The red star highlights Corpus Christi’s exact location, directly referencing the Texas state flag.
The typography features massive, geometrically precise letters. The custom sans serif font features clear hexagonal shapes and sharply cut stroke ends, giving the composition a monumental, athletic presence. The top line, “Corpus Christi,” is set in minimalist uppercase sans-serif letters. At the same time, “HOOKS” is presented in a bold, heavy typeface with strong geometric forms, creating a dependable, long-standing image of a sports team. The typographic composition integrates seamlessly with the logo’s shapes and colors, reinforcing both regional pride and the baseball club’s competitive spirit.
