DARKMATTER Sciences was created under MONARC Holdings, founded in Rochester, New York, in 2021 by Joseph Cufari, Brett Mauer, and David Ramold. Cufari brought over 30 years of technology experience. Mauer contributed 16 years of experience in tactical applications for law enforcement and the military, along with related patents. Their work addressed a weakness in conventional trauma pads placed behind ballistic armor, which mainly acted as spacers rather than dispersing impact energy.
The company developed Energy Dispersal Pads from a patented variable-stiffness composite installed between armor plates and the wearer. Independent testing under NIJ 0101.06 reported a 94% reduction in transferred kinetic energy compared with standard foam pads. The material also resisted repeated impacts better than polyethylene and polyurethane foams, which could break down after several hits.
In February 2022, MONARC signed distribution agreements with GovSmart, AmChar Wholesale, and KPI Tactical, moving DARKMATTER from testing into broader military and law-enforcement sales. In January 2023, it introduced Direct Armor Integration, allowing manufacturers to bond the material directly to ballistic plates.
An April 2023 partnership with Control Logistico Consulting Group opened access to military markets in over 23 Latin American countries. In January 2025, MONARC announced DARKMATTER UltraLight, a lighter integrated version designed for armor plates and aligned with the newer NIJ 0101.07 standard.
