Insurance protects property, transportation, and businesses from various risks and provides financial support after adverse events. Such services help compensate for losses and manage the consequences of incidents. The IAG logo is associated with an Australian insurance group that provides insurance products for individual clients and companies.

IAG (Insurance Australia Group): Brand overview

Insurance Australia Group traces its history to 1920. That year, the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA) was established in Australia. By the early 1980s, the organization had become the largest property insurer in New South Wales and began regional expansion. In 1998, the company entered the Asian market. In 2000, the company separated its insurance operations into an independent entity called NRMA Insurance Group.

In July 2000, the company completed demutualization. The company listed its shares on the Australian Stock Exchange. A year later, the company acquired New Zealand’s largest insurer, State Insurance. In 2002, the company changed its name to Insurance Australia Group Limited. In the following years, growth continued through a series of mergers and acquisitions. Among the purchases were CGU and NZI in 2003, which strengthened the group’s positions in two key markets.

In 2013, IAG acquired Wesfarmers’ insurance business for 1.845 billion Australian dollars. The deal included the Lumley, WFI, and Coles Insurance brands. In 2015, IAG partnered with Berkshire Hathaway.

Since 2018, IAG has focused on operations in Australia and New Zealand. The company sold its assets in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Malaysia. By 2021, gross premiums reached 12.55 billion Australian dollars. Total assets exceeded 33 billion. The group maintains leadership in the property insurance market and develops the brands NRMA, CGU, SGIO, SGIC, and RACV.

In 2024, the company’s profit rose to $1.49 billion.

Insurance Australia Group acquired 90 percent of RACQ Insurance for $ 855 million. A twenty-five-year distribution agreement was signed. The company announced the purchase of RAC’s insurance business in Western Australia for $ 1.35 billion. The deal is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Meaning and History

What is IAG?

The largest Australian insurance group headquartered in Sydney, leading in home, auto, and property insurance in Australia and New Zealand. Its portfolio includes the brands NRMA Insurance, CGU, SGIO, SGIC, NZI, State, and AMI. Its main revenue source is retail insurance covering auto, home, travel, and business risks.

2000 – 2002

Demutualization turned NRMA’s insurance operation into a public company and shaped the logo used from 2000 to 2002. NRMA Insurance separated from the roadside association and was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange as NRMA Insurance Group Limited. The new organization retained the NRMA abbreviation long associated with its insurance business.

The name came from National Roads and Motorists’ Association, established in New South Wales in 1920. NRMA’s insurance division began operating in 1925 and initially served motorists. By the end of the 20th century, it had grown into a major insurance company.

The dark blue NRMA abbreviation occupied most of the logo. Uppercase letters used a heavy sans-serif style and large geometric forms. The wordmark passed over a circular figure and covered part of its interior. The large letters gave the company’s historical name prominence.

A circle made from short horizontal bands appeared behind the text. Their ends followed the curve and created openings near the “R” and “M.” A winged wheel appeared at the top. The name sat within a layered emblem made from letters, bands, and an automotive image.

The wheel resembled a tire or toothed cylinder with a diagonal tread pattern. Symmetrical wings extended horizontally from both sides. A white outline separated their contours, while blue interior lines matched the letters and striped circle. The winged wheel connected the insurance business with the history of the motorists’ organization.

The public company adopted the name Insurance Australia Group Limited on January 15, 2002. IAG was formed from the initials of the new name. The parent organization united several insurance brands. NRMA Insurance continued operating as a consumer brand, while IAG became the group’s corporate name.

2002 – 2015

After demutualization, the insurance group managed several brands, and NRMA Insurance became part of its portfolio. Insurance Australia Group represented the parent company. NRMA Insurance continued serving customers under its established name.

Public company NRMA Insurance Group Limited became Insurance Australia Group Limited on January 15, 2002. A new logo accompanied the renaming. Cato Brand Partners developed it. IAG became the primary corporate signature and consisted of the initials of the full name.

The logo had 2 levels. A circular emblem and large IAG abbreviation occupied the upper line. Insurance Australia Group appeared below in a smaller size. The structure gave the short name the leading role while retaining the complete form for shareholders, business partners, and the public.

An abstract circular figure appeared on the left. A blue section resembled a broad crescent or open circle with a white area inside. Five gray curved segments stood on the right. They met at a lower point and spread upward like a fan. The circular foundation continued a motif from the former NRMA identity with a new structure and color division.

The IAG letters used a heavy sans-serif style. All 3 characters were dark blue and occupied most of the upper line’s height. Their substantial forms balanced the circular emblem. The full name appeared below in gray, set in a lighter sans-serif typeface. Blue connected the abbreviation with the left section of the emblem, while gray united the arcs with the explanatory line.

2015 – today

IAG (Insurance Australia Group) Logo

IAG introduced a new corporate identity developed by Landor on November 12, 2015. The company wanted IAG to become the group’s primary identifier and communicate the business’s international scale. By then, the holding company operated in Australia, New Zealand, and several Asian markets. Australia in the full name limited perceptions of the company beyond its domestic market.

Landor replaced uppercase IAG with lowercase iag. One word replaced the Insurance Australia Group line and circular emblem. The logo used a soft sans-serif typeface in rich purple. Purple replaced the blue used in the previous version, distinguishing the new identity from traditional financial-sector colors.

The “g” contained 2 rings. Its large upper circle was followed by a smaller lower loop that continued the letter’s vertical structure. Rounded forms repeated in the “a” and other parts of the wordmark. All 3 letters joined into a short word mark with a unified geometric construction.

IAG retained a connection with the legal name Insurance Australia Group Limited, which continued to appear in documents. The short signature represented the parent group and connected it with a portfolio of insurance brands. Consumer companies continued operating under their established names, while IAG appeared at the corporate level.

IAG appointed Australian agency Hulsbosch to develop the system further in 2018. The purple logo and lowercase iag spelling remained. The project covered corporate materials and new communication channels. “We make your world a safer place” became the foundation of the brand platform.

Hulsbosch expanded the circular motif contained in the “a” and “g.” Circles appeared in layouts, illustrations, and corporate materials. Bright supporting colors complemented purple. Typography received rounded forms, while photography and illustration followed shared application guidelines.
