For many Brazilians, salary transfers, purchase payments, and regular loan payments go through the bank. These transactions are repeated day after day, creating a sense of stability in financial matters. The Itaú Unibanco logo is associated with a bank that serves both individual and business clients, offering payment and transfer services, loans, and savings accounts.

Itau Unibanco: Brand overview

Itaú Unibanco emerged from the merger of two major Brazilian banks with a long history. Its origins date back to 1944, when the Moreira Salles family founded Banco Itaú in Minas Gerais. In the 1960s, the bank began expanding through acquisitions of regional institutions. In 1974, it was listed on the São Paulo Stock Exchange. By the end of the decade, Itaú had become one of the largest private banks in the country.

Unibanco was established in 1924 as Banco de Crédito Nacional. In 1967, after merging with União de Bancos Brasileiros, the bank received its modern name.

In the 1980s, both banks grew stronger amid hyperinflation. They invested in technology and the corporate sector. After the economy stabilized in the 1990s, Itaú completed several major deals, including the acquisition of Banco Banespa for 7 billion reais. During the same period, Unibanco acquired Banco Nacional and expanded its presence in Europe.

In 2008, amid the global crisis, the banks merged. In February 2009, Itaú Unibanco Holding SA was formed. Its assets totaled 450 billion reais, and its customer base exceeded 50 million.

Since the 2010s, the bank has been developing its digital segment. It invests in mobile services, fintech, and the Cubo Itaú venture hub. In 2016, the digital bank Iti was launched. In 2019, a stake in XP Investimentos was acquired.

By 2024, Itaú Unibanco will manage more than 2.5 trillion reais in assets. It is implementing biometrics, blockchain, and artificial intelligence. The bank maintains its status as the largest private bank in Latin America.

1943 – 1965

Banco Itau S.A. Logo 1943

The first logo of the Brazilian bank “Banco Itaú” was overloaded with small details and executed in a classic style. Through it, the bank presented a traditional, solid image at the outset of its operations.

At the center of the logo is a round medallion with intertwined uppercase letters “I” and “B,” the first characters of the name. The black letters intersect to form a single monogram. Along the edge of the circle runs the full inscription “BANCO ITAÚ S.A.,” set in a neat serif typeface closely resembling the well-known “Times New Roman.” The text is arranged along an arc and follows the circumference of the circle.

The upper and lower parts of the medallion are accompanied by decorative elements in the form of symmetrical, vertically oriented ornaments. Their execution resembles fine engraving or a textile pattern, with many details and small strokes. The rich texture of the ornaments strengthens the sense of handwork and attention to detail.

Black and shades of gray add a sense of solidity and seriousness to the image. The restrained color palette emphasizes the bank’s conservative, professional character.

This style helped “Banco Itaú” state its banking profile at the outset and create a trustworthy, respectable image among clients and partners.

1965 – 1972

In 1965, the design studio “PVDI” developed a new symbol for the Brazilian bank “Itaú Unibanco,” in an unusual style for banks of that time. The logo stood out for its black color and strict abstract geometry.

The symbol is built from blocks that form an inverted triangle with a pointed lower tip. Between the massive black elements, open space forms the letter “I.” The letter is visible through the contrast between the light background and the black details.

In the symbol’s design, some viewers see stylized letters “I” and “U” connected to the bank’s name. During development, “PVDI” did not aim for a single exact reading, leaving the image open to different interpretations. The logo offered viewers an individual interpretation while preserving clarity and business precision of presentation, despite its abstract character.

1973 – 1980

In the mid-1970s, “Itaú” introduced a new logo by “Alexandre Wollner,” which became an example of simplicity and concision. Before this, the bank had used an overly complex symbol that was difficult for clients and partners to recognize. The new style changed the situation, making brand identification easy and memorable.

The image is built around a rectangle with smoothly rounded corners. The form is filled with black, creating a background for the bank’s name. The inscription is placed in the lower part of the composition and executed in a bold white “Helvetica” typeface. A sharp diacritical accent is placed above the letter “u,” adding a distinctive feature to the simple structure of the word.

The use of black and white emphasizes the financial institution’s restraint and strictness.

The logo became a reflection of the practicality and functionality the bank needed during a period of growth and expansion of its client base. The new style helped “Itaú” present itself differently to the market.

1980 – 1992

In 1980, “Itaú” updated its logo, introducing small changes that altered the image’s perception. Externally, the mark kept its previous simplicity. Still, the details took on a slightly different form, making the visual image softer and smoother.

The sharper corners made the rectangle feel lighter. It kept its black background, still contrasting with the white letters of the bank’s name.

1992 – 2003

At the beginning of the color era in logos, “Itaú” was the first to use bright colors. The bank kept the previous rectangular form with rounded corners, preserved the “Helvetica” typeface, and the accent above the letter “u.” Now the changes affected only the color scheme.

The background changed from black to dark blue. The bank’s name was executed in yellow, which contrasted with the new background.

The change in color scheme emphasized “Itaú’s” transition toward a modern perception, while preserving the simplicity and strictness of the style used in previous logo versions.

2003 – 2023

When “Itaú” and “Unibanco” merged on November 4, 2008, a new banking giant, “Itaú Unibanco,” emerged on the market. The “Itaú” brand itself continued to exist, preserving the image and reputation it had earned over previous years.

The bank merger prompted a small logo update. The main lines remained the same, namely a rectangle with neat, rounded corners and a short, lowercase inscription. A soft color change took place. The previous dark blue background and yellow letters became a couple of shades lighter.

The inscription is executed in a typeface similar to the well-known fonts “Neo Sans” or “Futura Rounded.” The letters became more rounded and harmonious. The accent above the letter “u” remained unchanged.

2010 – 2018

The next update to the “Itaú” logo changed the background square’s style. Instead of the familiar flat blue color, a three-dimensional glossy effect appeared. The square resembles a glass surface or a button in a mobile app interface.

The form remained the same. It is a compact plaque with rounded corners that gives softness to the silhouette. A gradient appeared on the new dark blue background. The upper part looks lighter, while closer to the lower edge, the shade becomes deeper and more saturated. This creates the impression of a convex surface.

The bank name, “Itaú,” is rendered in bright yellow. The text is lowercase, with the first letter uppercase. The typeface is simple, with rounded outlines. An additional touch is a light, dark shadow placed behind the letters, creating the impression that the inscription is raised above the square.

The visual presentation of this period emphasizes the brand’s connection to new technologies while preserving its traditional simplicity.

2023 – today

The company decided to reconsider the brand image. On December 6, 2023, the bank presented the results of its collaboration with the international agencies “Africa Creative Galeria” and “Pentagram,” with the well-known designer “Michael Bierut” responsible for the project. The new logo combines a connection to the company’s past with a path toward further development.

The familiar rectangle went through a transformation. The sidelines now bend smoothly outward, forming a soft figure resembling a cushion. The color changed radically. Dark blue was replaced with bright orange. This color had long been familiar to “Itaú” clients, having been used since the 1980s. However, shades of blue were retained to distinguish the “Itaú Uniclass” and “Itaú Personnalité” segments.

The inscription preserved its simplicity and concision. Now the word “itaú” begins with a lowercase letter and is executed in “Itaú Display,” a typeface created specifically for the bank. In form, it resembles popular font families such as “Helvetica Rounded,” “VAG Rounded,” or “Avenir Next Rounded.” Above the letter “u” is a short white line at an angle, indicating features of the Portuguese language.

The new image preserves the recognizability of “Itaú” through previous details and new visual ideas, remaining appropriate for one of Brazil’s leading financial brands.
