Julius Baer: Brand overview

Julius Baer Bank was founded in Zurich in 1890. Ludwig Hirschhorn and Theodor Grob founded it. After Grob left the partnership, Julius Baer continued to lead management. His name later became associated with Swiss private banking. In 1901, the partnership Julius Bär and Co. was established. It acquired a brokerage seat on the Zurich Stock Exchange and began trading in securities.

In 1922, Walter Baer took over management. Under his leadership, the organization strengthened its position in the financial industry. During this period, the bank helped found the Association of Swiss Private Bankers. In 1940, the bank moved part of its operations to New York. In the 1960s, Julius Baer expanded its operations in the Americas, opening branches in Mexico and the United Kingdom.

In 1970, management passed to the third generation of the Baer family. During this period, the bank established investment funds and created an offshore structure in the Cayman Islands. In 1980, the bank listed its shares on the Zurich Stock Exchange. It became the first Swiss private bank to go public. In the following years, the representative network expanded significantly. It opened new offices in London, New York, Hong Kong, and other global financial centers.

By the 1990s, assets under management reached $32 billion. In 2000, Julius Baer shares were included in the SMI index. This confirmed its status as one of Switzerland’s leading companies. After 2005, the bank acquired several private banks previously owned by UBS, as well as GAM. During this period, the Baer family lost its controlling stake, and the bank became fully public.

In the 2010s, Julius Baer strengthened its position in Asia and Latin America. The bank entered into partnership agreements with Macquarie Group, Bank of China, and Kairos. In 2012, it acquired the Merrill Lynch wealth management division. This became one of the largest deals in the bank’s history.

The company is a world leader in private banking services. Assets under management exceed CHF 400 billion. The bank has an extensive network of offices in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.

Julius Baer Logo

The two forms of the name, Julius Bär and Julius Baer, preserve the bank’s connection with Julius Bär, the founder of the banking dynasty. In the German spelling, the letter “ä” carries an umlaut, while the international version renders the vowel as “ae.” The logo uses Julius Bär. Both words are set in a dark blue serif typeface. The uppercase “J” and “B” rise above the lowercase letters, thick primary strokes alternate with thin connecting strokes, and the umlaut completes the form of the surname.

The bank’s history began under a different name. On September 20, 1890, Ludwig Hirschhorn and Theodor Grob opened Hirschhorn & Grob in Zurich as a firm specializing in foreign exchange and securities transactions. Julius Bär was born in Heidelsheim, Germany, moved to Switzerland in 1886, and joined the firm as a partner in 1896. After ownership changes, the firm was renamed Hirschhorn, Uhl & Baer. In 1901, Bär became the sole general partner and renamed the business Julius Baer & Co.

During its first decades, the bank presented itself to clients under the owner’s full name. After Julius Bär died in 1922, his sons took over management and kept the name. International expansion began in 1940 with a presence in New York. In 1974, the partners approved the conversion into a corporation. In 1980, Julius Baer became the first Swiss private banking company to go public. The business’s growth created a need for consistent standards governing materials issued under the family name.

In 1985, Swiss designer Ernst Hiestand and his studio, Ernst Hiestand + Partner AG, developed the corporate identity for Bank Julius Bär. Hiestand also designed for the Swiss National Bank and Zurich’s public transportation system. For the bank’s identity, he gave the serif name and rich blue color the leading role.

In 2009, Julius Bär Holding AG was divided into two separate groups. Julius Baer focused on serving wealthy private clients, while GAM received the asset management business. GAM retained a license to use the Julius Bär Funds name for selected investment products. The banking group specializing in private wealth management kept the primary name and blue wordmark.

In 2013, FutureBrand updated the identity surrounding the existing Julius Bär wordmark. The agency led positioning, the creative platform, and the brand identity. The program was based on the idea of purity in presentation, connected with the bank’s specialization in pure private banking. Designer Nick Renn helped develop the brand guidelines. During 2013 and 2014, VIM Group helped implement the update across the international network. Its work included transition plans, templates, and materials for more than 50 offices.

The blue color was named Julius Baer Royal Blue. Creative Direction Charles Blunier & Co. later refined the brand and changed the shade. The blue became richer and warmer than previous versions. The bank retained blue and white versions of the name for use on different backgrounds.

Beginning in 2015, the Zurich agency Geyst developed shared standards for presenting the bank to an international audience. By 2019, it had created the “True Connections” platform, dedicated to personal relationships with clients. The updated materials continued to feature the existing Julius Bär logo.

An additional emblem depicting the headquarters at Bahnhofstrasse 36 in Zurich appeared in 2019. The bank has occupied the building since 1925. Its silhouette links the identity to Julius Baer’s history and its city of origin. The version dedicated to the bank’s heritage takes the form of a round blue seal. A line drawing of the building appears in the center, while the inscriptions “JULIUS BÄR” and “SINCE 1890” repeat around the edge. The seal is used together with the main wordmark.
