Financial operations in South Korea encompass card payments, loans, savings, and business services. These services are delivered through integrated banking and investment offerings. The KB Financial Group logo represents a major financial group that provides banking, insurance, and investment services to individual clients and businesses.
KB Financial Group’s history dates back to 1963. During that period, the South Korean government established Kookmin Bank. Its mission was to serve low- and middle-income citizens. In 1967, the Korea Housing Bank was established and later renamed the Housing and Commercial Bank. These two banks became the foundation of the country’s commercial banking system.
In the 1990s, Kookmin Bank began privatization. During this period, the bank expanded abroad, opening offices in Luxembourg, Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong. After the 1997 financial crisis, Kookmin Bank absorbed several troubled banks. These included Daedong Bank and Korea Long-Term Credit Bank. This made it the country’s largest bank by assets. In 1999, the investment fund Goldman Sachs invested in the bank.
In 2001, Kookmin Bank and Housing and Commercial Bank completed their merger. As a result, they formed a unified Kookmin Bank. It was listed on the New York and Korean stock exchanges. Afterward, the bank began developing its technological infrastructure, with a stronger focus on profitability.
In 2008, KB Financial Group was established based on Kookmin Bank. It began developing additional business areas, including insurance, brokerage services, and consumer lending.
In 2015, KB acquired LIG Insurance and renamed it KB Insurance. In 2016, Hyundai Securities joined the group. Later, it was merged with KB Investment & Securities into a single structure called KB Securities.
In 2020, KB acquired Prudential Financial’s South Korean division. In 2021, the group became the main shareholder of the Indonesian Bank Bukopin. The bank was renamed KB Bukopin.
In 2022, the company upgraded its digital services. The company introduced the new KB Star Banking app and acquired Nexible Platform to enhance data analytics. In 2023, KB Financial Group expanded its insurance operations.
The company submitted an annual report to the SEC. It confirmed that it implemented its corporate plan to increase business value. KB Financial Group remains one of South Korea’s leading financial organizations. The group includes banks, insurance companies, brokerage firms, and investment divisions.
Meaning and History
What is KB Financial Group?
It is South Korea’s largest financial group, founded on one of the country’s leading banks and uniting thirteen subsidiaries. The group includes major market players such as KB Kookmin Bank, with more than 1,000 branches; the investment company KB Securities; insurers KB Insurance and Prudential Life Korea; and the credit card issuer KB Kookmin Card. The customer base is about 36 million people, and total assets exceed 663 trillion won. The holding is expanding internationally by acquiring the Indonesian Bank Bukopin and strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia.
2008 – 2011
KB Financial Group began operations on September 29, 2008, bringing together Kookmin Bank and its affiliated companies. The holding company was created by transferring shares to a new parent organization. Banking, investment, asset management, and other financial companies received a shared brand already familiar to Kookmin Bank customers. In the name, the short form “KB” was supplemented with the words “Financial Group.” From 2008 to 2011, the logo used the letters “KB” and the yellow Star-b emblem created for the bank in 2002.
The brand’s history dates back to two Korean banks. In 1963, the government of the Republic of Korea established Citizens National Bank, which later became Kookmin Bank. It served individual customers and small and medium-sized businesses. The government founded Housing Bank in 1967 and later renamed it Housing & Commercial Bank. It specialized in housing finance. After the two institutions merged, the combined Kookmin Bank began operations on November 1, 2001. The Korean word 국민, Kookmin, means “people” or “citizens.”
The combined bank required a unified identity. American agency Landor Associates and Korean agency Design Focus joined the project on January 21, 2002. Landor developed the brand foundation, while Design Focus created applications for various media. The short name “KB” and the idea “Leading the way. Together.” were approved on February 19 for public communication. The bank retained the official name Kookmin Bank. Landor presented eight logo options in March. After review, three candidates remained, and the bank approved the final version and its colors on April 9. The bank unveiled the new identity on October 1.
The Star-b emblem combined six radiating rays with a small shape resembling a lowercase Latin “b.” The star’s intersecting strokes resembled the Cyrillic letter “Zhe.” The “b” loop appeared on the right and slightly below the rays. The loose outlines gave the emblem a hand-drawn appearance. Design Focus associated the yellow emblem with KB’s intention to become a “star of global finance.” The image represented its development plans and its ambition to rank among the world’s leading financial institutions.
In 2005, the bank engaged Interbrand to review its brand management. The project covered relationships among the brands, product naming rules, and principles for communicating with the public. The phrase “미래를 여는 지혜,” meaning “Wisdom That Opens the Future,” emerged from the project. Star-b was retained and transferred to the financial group along with the “KB” designation when the holding company was created in 2008.
In the holding company’s logo, large uppercase letters spelling “KB” appeared on the left in gray-brown. The sans-serif letters had even outlines and vertical strokes. The yellow Star-b appeared on the right and was larger than the wordmark. The structured letterforms were paired with the loose arrangement of the radiating rays. The primary logo consisted of the abbreviation and emblem, while the words “Financial Group” appeared in the organization’s full name.
2011 – today
KB Financial Group unveiled an updated logo featuring the holding company’s full name on March 28, 2011. The changes accompanied the group’s restructuring after Kookmin Bank separated its credit card business into the independent company KB Kookmin Card. The subsidiaries operating under the shared “KB” name required consistent identity standards that indicated their affiliation with one financial organization.
The yellow Star-b emblem moved to the left and shrank relative to the text. In the horizontal logo, the name “KB Financial Group” became the primary component, with the star-shaped figure positioned beside it. Its outlines and meaning were retained. The group associates Star-b with a focus on the future and the ambition to become a world-class financial institution.
The name appears in gray-brown. The abbreviation “KB” consists of uppercase letters. At the same time, the words “Financial” and “Group” begin with capital “F” and “G” followed by lowercase letters. The three parts are separated by narrow spaces and set in a single line in a sans-serif typeface. The combination of the yellow emblem and dark wordmark continues the color tradition established after the merger of Kookmin Bank and Housing & Commercial Bank.
The logo uses a “KB” letter style connected with the corporate KB Financial Font family. The typeface was developed to provide a consistent identity for the group’s companies. Straight letter strokes are combined with rounded forms. In the company’s interpretation, the straight lines represent trust, while the rounded forms represent friendly communication. The structured wordmark complements Star-b’s loose outlines.
