The MadCat Logo is associated with a chain of stores where every customer is cared for. These stores offer a comfortable space, attentive service, advice, and quality products, from food and accessories to pet health products.

MadCat: Brand overview

MadCat began in September 2002 with a pet store on Williamson Street, known as Willy Street, in Madison, Wisconsin. The shop sold food, treats, toys, beds, furniture, and accessories for cats and dogs, often carrying products from small manufacturers and local makers. Staff reviewed ingredient lists, avoided foods containing additives such as corn gluten, and advised customers on feeding, care, and animal behavior.

Co-owner Ted O’Donnell became involved in local cat-welfare issues during the 2000s. MadCat worked with rescue groups and used its stores as meeting points for residents interested in adoption and animal protection. The company later opened branches on Mineral Point Road and Monroe Street, creating a three-store Madison chain. It remained far smaller than PetSmart or Petco and competed locally with Mounds Pet Food Warehouse and Bad Dog Frida.

Over time, MadCat placed greater emphasis on cat products while still serving dog owners. Its range included scratching posts, houses, furniture, handmade toys, and catnip items. Stores hosted adoptable animals and partnered with Madison Cat Project, Underdog Pet Rescue, Misfit Felines, 9 Lives Rescue, and D-Triple F Ranch and Rescue.

In early 2019, the original Willy Street branch moved from 1012 to 1525 Williamson Street. The new site was over four times larger, providing room for a wider catalog and animal areas. By the mid-2020s, MadCat still operated three Madison locations as an independent regional retailer.

MadCat Logo

MadCat is an American chain of specialty stores selling various cat products and accessories. It is known for its vibrant, original design style across its merchandise.

The company name appears beneath the logo’s stylized cat head symbol. The cat looks unusual and slightly chaotic: its head, with elongated ears and no mouth, is depicted in black, featuring eyes that are elongated and uneven, which creates a sense of slight wildness or playfulness. Several curved lines around the head represent whiskers, appearing disordered and pointing in different directions.

The name “MADCAT” is written in an angular sans-serif font. Each letter appears to have been cut out individually, since its shape varies and it tilts in different directions. The text comprises chaotically arranged geometric fragments, giving it a dynamic and rebellious character.

MadCat Symbol

The primary color is deep black, the sole color contrasting against a white background. Such a palette emphasizes the store’s connection to alternative culture and the style of its products. The company sells unusual goods and accessories for cats, emphasizing the merchandise’s uniqueness and individuality.
