Moving, renovations, or a lack of space in an apartment often leave belongings needing temporary storage off-site. It’s important to know that they will be carefully stored and remain accessible when needed. The Public Storage logo is associated with a company that provides storage units for personal and business items on a short- or long-term basis.

Public Storage: Brand overview

Public Storage was founded in 1972 in California by entrepreneur B. Wayne Hughes. The idea of self-storage was new at that time. The first facility, covering 1,200 square meters in El Cajon, attracted customers. By the mid-1970s, the company had opened several complexes in Southern California. It offered affordable storage units on the outskirts of the city.

In 1980, Hughes partnered with developer Kenneth Volk Jr. This accelerated the network’s growth. By 1986, Public Storage had expanded beyond the state and entered Texas and Florida. In 1987, the company became a real estate investment trust. It conducted an IPO and raised 60 million dollars for further expansion.

In the 1990s, major acquisitions began. In 1994, the company acquired Storage Trust Realty. In 1997, it merged with Shurgard Storage Centers. By the end of the decade, the network included more than 1,500 facilities. In 2003, Public Storage completed the integration of Shurgard. In 2006, the company exited the European business.

After the 2008 crisis, the company focused on technology. It introduced online booking and automated kiosks. Later, a dynamic pricing system was implemented. In 2015, after the founder’s death, management was transferred to a professional team.

Since 2019, Public Storage has been developing digital services and contactless solutions. In 2021, the company completed its largest acquisition, valued at $ 2.2 billion, expanding its portfolio by 200 facilities.

The company operates more than 2,800 facilities in the United States and Canada. The total area amounts to about 20 million square meters. It remains the global leader in the self-storage market.

The Public Storage logo from the first period serves as the visual starting point for the company’s early efforts to redefine personal storage. At that time, storage facilities were mainly industrial sites for companies. The brand offered a different format: individual units for private customers and small businesses. The openness of this format explains the name “Public Storage” and emphasizes its mass appeal and accessibility.

The logo is based on a rectangle with softened corners, colored in a calm light orange. Inside it are the symbol and the name.

The symbol is a compact rectangle in rich purple, outlined with a thin yellow line. Its central part is occupied by two large white uppercase letters, “P” and “S,” placed one above the other. The typeface used in the symbol is heavy and closely resembles “Futura Bold” or “Avenir Heavy.”

The brand name is positioned to the right of the mark and occupies two lines. The words “Public” and “Storage” are written one under the other in white letters, using the same typeface as the symbol. The image is built around a simple idea: a person gets storage space without intermediaries, rules, or barriers.

Over time, Public Storage changed, but the first logo can still be found in some places. It serves as a reminder of how the brand shaped a new segment by introducing the idea of personal storage outside the warehouse industry to the audience.

2017 – today

Public Storage Logo

Over the years, Public Storage grew from a company with local storage facilities into a major international player, publicly traded and operating locations across America and beyond. The name remained unchanged, although a shortened “PS” mark also appeared and was used separately from the main logo.

The company’s new logo preserved the original’s general character while adopting a more modern, refined appearance. The same rectangular form with rounded corners was painted bright orange, which became the main background of the entire mark. Unlike the earlier version, the text is now centered and still consists of the word “Public” at the top and “Storage” below.

Both words are set in white, with the first letter of each capitalized. The typeface remained similar in style. It is a dense sans-serif font that closely resembles well-known fonts such as “Avenir Heavy” or “Futura Bold.” Still, the letters became slightly heavier and more compact.

The short “PS” version still appears separately at times. Still, the full logo became the company’s main symbol in all official materials. Visually, it became simpler, remaining within a single rectangle and a single color.

Despite business expansion and the company’s stock market listing, the Public Storage logo preserved the identity formed at the very beginning. The logo did not undergo significant changes. It was gradually updated while maintaining the familiar brand image and its connection to storing personal belongings and small loads.
