In the insurance and finance sectors, people often seek peace of mind and clear terms rather than grandiose promises. The Baloise logo embodies this perception: discreet protection for matters that affect daily life and financial stability. For the company’s clients, the logo serves as a symbol of support grounded in order and rules, where interactions proceed calmly and without pressure.

Baloise: Brand overview

Baloise was founded on May 2, 1863, in Basel, following the devastating 1861 fire in Glarus. Initially, the company specialized in fire insurance. As early as 1864, it opened departments for transport and life insurance. By the end of the 19th century, the company had representatives in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

After World War I, the company regained its position in the European market and expanded operations in France, Spain, and Luxembourg. In 1962, the holding structure Bâloise Holding was created. In 1971, the main insurance companies were merged under the brand Basler Versicherungs-Gesellschaft.

In the 1980s, Baloise strengthened its international presence and acquired assets in Germany, Austria, Belgium, and Italy. In the 1990s, the company underwent restructuring and withdrew from the United States, France, and Italy. In 1993, it acquired the Swiss bank SoBa, marking the beginning of a combined insurance and financial services model.

In the 2000s, Baloise consolidated its position in Europe through deals in Luxembourg, Belgium, Croatia, and Liechtenstein. In 2009, the Safety World concept was launched. In 2016, the Simply Safe strategy was introduced, focusing on digital transformation and performance improvement.

In 2017, the company acquired the online platform MOVU. In 2020, it launched the digital insurer FRIDAY in Germany. In 2024, a refocusing program was initiated, with a focus on insurance, asset management, and prevention.

On April 22, 2025, Baloise and Helvetia announced a merger of equals. The new company, Helvetia Baloise Holding, was formed. After shareholder and regulatory approval, the combined structure headquartered in Basel will become the second-largest insurance group in Switzerland. Its market share will be about 20 percent. The total business volume will reach 20 billion francs.

The company known today as Baloise was originally called Basler Versicherungen and has been in the insurance business since 1863. At that time, it used a logo consisting of a simple inscription and a compact symbol.

The company name consisted of two words, each on a separate line. At the top, “Basler” was written in large letters, with the first letter capitalized and the rest in lowercase. Below it, “Versicherungen” was set in a smaller font, also with the first letter capitalized and the rest in lowercase. A simple sans-serif font was used for both inscriptions, similar to Frutiger, or slightly softer and closer to Helvetica Rounded. The top inscription looked more powerful and solid.

On the left was a blue symbol resembling a diamond, with the right side extended by a short horizontal stroke. The result was a concise, abstract symbol, memorable for its shape and simplicity.

A rich blue, typical of insurance and financial companies, was used for the entire logo.

Later, the company adopted the modern name Baloise. Still, the original visual style of Basler Versicherungen and the core features of the previous logo formed the foundation for the updated brand identity.

2022 – today

Baloise Logo

In 2022, the Bâloise Holding AG group consolidated all its subsidiaries under the single Baloise brand. Among these subsidiaries was the insurance company Basler Versicherungen, which had operated under its old name since 1863. Following the transition to the common name, the group unveiled a refreshed Baloise logo that emphasizes the unity of all divisions and their affiliation with a single structure.

The new logo is based on the word “baloise,” rendered in sans-serif lowercase letters. The text color is dark blue. The font is bold and, in form and character, resembles the Avenir or Museo Sans Rounded typefaces.

The symbol is positioned to the left of the name, continuing the minimalist theme. It is a rhombus-like shape, with an open, unfinished contour on the right side. It differs from the previous Basler Versicherungen symbol by lacking the short horizontal stroke on the right. The rhombus appears open, visually light, and simple, creating a sense of openness and flexibility.

The change to the Baloise logo was part of a major rebranding initiative across all divisions. In this way, the company emphasized that these are not separate entities under different names, but a single business united by a common name and style.
