COPD Foundation: Brand overview

John Walsh founded the COPD Foundation in 2004 after being diagnosed with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The organization initially aimed to raise awareness about COPD, which was poorly understood and frequently diagnosed late.

In 2005, the foundation began producing educational resources to improve early diagnosis and treatment. By 2007, it had launched the first nationwide information hotline, providing direct support to patients and their families.

To accelerate research, the Biomarker Qualification Consortium was established in 2009, uniting regulatory bodies, pharmaceutical companies, and academics. In 2010, COPD360social, an online community for patients, medical professionals, and researchers, was introduced to facilitate collaboration.

The Patient-Powered Research Network was established in 2012, allowing patients to participate directly in research initiatives. Two years later, the Praxis program began training primary healthcare providers in advanced management of COPD.

In 2016, the foundation established a national patient registry to gather data on treatment outcomes and disease progression. COPD360net was established in 2018 to create a network of clinical research centers, thereby expediting the development of new treatments.

Educational outreach expanded further in 2020 with the introduction of new online resources and a telemedicine service, thereby enhancing access to care. By 2022, the foundation had increased its international cooperation, establishing partnerships with global medical associations to improve pulmonary disease management.

COPD Foundation Logo

The COPD Foundation emblem was created to emphasize the organization’s medical and scientific orientation while highlighting its specialization in respiratory health. The visual concept combines the symbolism of breathing with anatomical details, creating a unified image that connects to the foundation’s mission.

The key element is a mark of four triangular blades resembling a propeller or a rotating windmill. The blades are colored alternately, one in deep orange, the next in dark blue. The pointed shapes and dynamic arrangement create the illusion of air movement, evoking associations with breathing. At the center of the composition are lungs with a detailed representation of their bronchial tree and vascular system. This symbol is related to the medical theme and highlights the issues associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The text block is placed to the right of the emblem. The inscription is divided into two levels: “COPD” and “FOUNDATION.” The first word is typed in a massive geometric grotesque with dense strokes and large proportions. It points to the name of the disease that the foundation’s work is directed against. The second word is executed in a thinner grotesque with elongated forms. The different weights create balance and unity in the composition. Both levels of text are written in uppercase letters, which ensures clarity of perception and underscores the seriousness of the organization’s mission.

The color system is limited to two tones. Dark blue symbolizes reliability, professionalism, and medical rigor. Bright orange adds energy and is associated with alertness and emergency assistance.

The COPD Foundation logo strikes a balance between the precision of medical language and accessibility for a broad audience. It is connected to the theme of breathing and respiratory diseases, conveying the foundation’s values, including patient support, a scientific approach, and a focus on improving quality of life.
