Ecolab: Brand overview

Economics Laboratory, later known as Ecolab, was established by Merritt J. Osborne in 1923 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Its initial product, Soilax, was a powdered carpet cleaner that allowed for cleaning without removing carpets.

In 1928, the company introduced the first automated dishwasher for commercial use, improving hygiene standards in hotels and restaurants. During the 1930s, despite the Great Depression, Ecolab expanded into comprehensive cleaning services for the hospitality sector, laying the groundwork for a distribution network.

Production capacity grew significantly in the 1940s, driven in part by the demands of World War II. Following the war, the company diversified into household chemicals and, after going public in 1957, initiated international expansion.

Throughout the 1960s, Ecolab expanded globally, establishing manufacturing in several countries and introducing advanced disinfection technologies. In 1979, the organization officially rebranded itself as Ecolab, reflecting the broader industrial solutions it had offered since the early 1970s.

Acquisitions in the 1980s and 1990s broadened its capabilities; notably, the 1987 acquisition of ChemLawn provided entry into the lawn care market. Further growth occurred in the 2000s, highlighted by the $8.1 billion acquisition of Nalco in 2011, significantly enhancing its expertise in water treatment. Ecolab continued strategic acquisitions, including Champion Technologies for $2.2 billion in 2013, boosting its presence in the energy sector.

From 2016 to 2020, Ecolab emphasized digital advancements and automation, introducing technologies to optimize resource use. Between 2021 and 2024, the company maintained its innovative direction, continuing to grow internationally and diversify its products across various industries.

1987 – 2007

The rebranding of Economics Laboratory to Ecolab marked a significant milestone in the company’s history, as it was accompanied by the departure from the consumer segment and a shift in focus to the industrial and specialized sectors. The sale of the household product line to Reckitt Benckiser, combined with the acquisition of ChemLawn, marked a shift in the company’s focus to the professional market. A new emblem was created to visually express this step.

The logo’s base color is rich blue. It is associated with water, cleanliness, and hygiene, reflecting the company’s mission in environmental safety. The palette emphasizes a strict industrial style.

The symbol is embedded inside the letter O. It is a stylized burst composed of intersecting sharp rays. The geometry of the figure creates the impression of radiance, and the symbolism can be interpreted as a visual metaphor for purification and disinfection processes. Dynamic rays, combined with heavy typography, create a balance between energy and reliability.

The logo’s typography is rendered in a grotesque style. All letters are uppercase, the lines straight and thickened. The horizontal of the letter L smoothly transitions into the left side of the A, forming a visual link. The A lacks a horizontal bar, which makes the text easier to read and adds individuality to the letterforms.

The Ecolab emblem became a visual expression of the company’s new course. The blue color fixes the theme of water and cleanliness, the burst in the letter O symbolizes hygienic treatment processes, and the monumental font conveys stability. The composition reflects the reorientation toward professional services and specialized industrial solutions, securing the brand’s reputation as a reliable partner in quality and environmental safety.

2007 – 2022

When the company turned to Lippincott, the task was to strengthen Ecolab’s technological image and highlight its international development. In collaboration with internal specialists, an updated design was created that focused on the company’s industrial nature and its specialization in cleaning, hygiene, and water treatment.

The overall structure of the logo retained its horizontal arrangement. In the new font, adapted for Ecolab, the letters became more angular and rigid. The letterforms convey precision associated with technological processes. The letter proportions were reworked to achieve visual balance and create a unique appearance.

A key difference from the previous version was the separation of the letters L and A. Previously, they formed a connected pair; now, they are presented separately.

The symbol in the letter O was changed. Whereas the previous version represented a complex interweaving of rays, the new version made the star symmetrical, with evenly sharpened ends. The symbol appears cleaner and more orderly, serving as a metaphor for technologies that are clean, lightweight, and provide water.

The color scheme shifted from dark blue to light blue. The new color is associated with transparency, freshness, and modern technology. It emphasizes an ecological focus and strengthens the brand’s perception as an international leader in its field.

The changes gave Ecolab’s visual style a stricter and more technological character. The Ecolab logo became more restrained, precise, and modern, reflecting the company’s strategy, its global goals, and its ambition to remain a leader in innovation and environmental safety.

2022 – today

In 2022, Ecolab turned to Siegel+Gale, which was tasked with creating a modern, digitally adaptive image that would preserve brand recognition while highlighting the company’s global ambitions. The designers focused on details that enhance the logo’s technological character and versatility, as well as its functionality in digital environments.

The composition remained the same, but the symbol inside the letter O received a new execution. It represents a closed circle (or the letter “O”) with a four-pointed star inside the negative space of the letter. The lines are smooth, do not intersect, and are oriented diagonally. The rays are slightly elongated and asymmetrical, giving the mark a harmonious appearance. The symbol continues to convey the ideas of light, clean water, and technological influence, reflecting the company’s responsibility for preserving natural resources.

The typographic part did not change. As in the previous version, a custom typeface from the humanist grotesque family is used for Ecolab. Its forms are soft and smooth, adding a sense of openness and friendliness.

Ecolab Symbol

The new shade of blue for the entire logo is brighter and more saturated than before. It is adapted for screens and digital media, enhancing perception in online environments and strengthening the connection to the themes of cleanliness and technology.

The emblem in its new version continues the tradition of continuity, but the emphasis has shifted to global presence and digital compatibility. Through details, the company’s leadership ambitions and focus on innovative solutions are expressed, while the simplicity and clarity historically associated with Ecolab’s visual image are preserved.
