Narrator grew from Ahmed Elsamadisi’s work in data engineering. After studying autonomous vehicle algorithms at Cornell and developing missile-defense AI at Raytheon, he joined WeWork in 2015 as its first data-team hire. His group later grew to 40 analysts and engineers. Yet, basic business questions still took weeks because information was scattered across connected tables.
In 2017, Elsamadisi founded Narrator in New York with former WeWork colleagues Cedric Dussu, Michael Nason, and Matt Star. Their platform centered on Activity Schema, a standardized 11-column table designed to replace traditional star-schema models built separately for different questions.
Narrator joined Y Combinator’s S19 batch in 2019. In October, it raised a $6.2 million Series A led by Initialized Capital, with Flybridge Capital Partners, Y Combinator, and Gmail co-creator Paul Buchheit participating. Total funding reached about $7.65 million. TechCrunch described its aim as an operating system for data science. The company then moved from consulting toward a subscription SaaS product with a free tier covering five million data rows.
Elsamadisi presented Activity Schema at dbt Labs’ Coalesce 2021, and Forbes named him to its 30 Under 30 list in enterprise technology. Narrator competed with dbt Labs and Looker but failed to gain enough customers, and Y Combinator later listed it as inactive. Activity Schema continued as an open standard, while Elsamadisi moved into agent-based AI systems.

The authors of the Narrator emblem drew on the dual nature of data analytics, which combines humanistic and technical approaches in their design. As a result, the basis of the sign was constructed from simple geometric figures that were filled with semantic ambiguity and figurative associations.
The construction consists of two elements united into a single symbol: a red hexagon and a two-color circle. The hexagon is oriented at a sharp downward angle, evoking associations with a shield or open book pages. In the upper part of the form, a circle is inscribed, divided into two color segments. The upper segment is painted in a light blue shade, while the lower segment is painted in a dark violet shade. The sign is perceived as the symbol of an eye, reflecting the theme of observation and data analysis.
The color solutions support the duality of the sign. The red shade of the hexagon is visually perceived as the basic structural foundation. The light blue color emphasizes associations with technology and digital solutions, while violet unites both directions in a single image, symbolizing the interaction between technical logic and a humanistic approach.
