OneMain Financial: Brand overview

OneMain Financial dates back to 1912. That year, Alexander Edward Duncan and a group of businessmen founded Commercial Credit Company in Baltimore. Initially, the company provided loans to manufacturers against accounts receivable. Starting in 1916, it focused on financing automobile sales. In the 1930s, after the economic crisis, the company expanded its operations. It established insurance divisions and acquired American Credit Indemnity Co. and Calvert Fire Insurance.

In 1956, Commercial Credit acquired Dearborn Motors Credit Corp. and entered the agricultural equipment market. In 1968, Control Data Corporation took control of the company and used it to finance leases on computer equipment. In 1986, under Sandy Weill’s leadership, Commercial Credit went public as an independent entity. Twelve years later, in 1998, Citicorp acquired it.

In 2011, the company was renamed OneMain Financial. Since then, it has focused on consumer lending and insurance services. Its business targeted customers with limited access to traditional bank credit.

Meanwhile, Interstate Finance Corporation, founded in 1920 in Indiana, developed independently. After several transformations, it became American General Finance and joined AIG Group. In 2010, Fortress Investment Group acquired the company and renamed it Springleaf Financial. In 2013, Springleaf went public. In November 2015, it acquired OneMain Financial from Citigroup for $ 4.25 billion. The merger was completed in 2016. The combined company retained the name OneMain Financial.

By December 2020, the company operated about 1,500 branches in 44 states and had launched the online platform iLoan. In April 2021, OneMain acquired the fintech company Trim. In May 2023, regulators identified violations in interest calculations and insurance product marketing. The company paid clients compensation and revised its internal procedures.

In 2024, Douglas Shulman, who had led the company since 2018, continued to develop digital services and the risk management system. In November 2024, he joined CVS Health’s board of directors.

The company strengthened its market position, improved the quality of its loan portfolio, and improved its financial performance. It issued senior notes with an annual interest rate of 6.125 percent. The company’s market capitalization was about $ 5.69 billion.

What is OneMain Financial?

An American provider of unsecured consumer loans focused on customers with low- and medium-credit ratings. The network has more than 1,400 branches in 44 states and offers personal loans for home repairs, education, medical expenses, and major purchases. It primarily operates in the subprime segment, where banks often deny borrowers. It issues loans for 2 to 5 years at a fixed rate, with monthly payments. The company also offers insurance products, refinancing, and credit cards.

before 2011

The red arc above the CitiFinancial name came from the Travelers umbrella. After Travelers Group and Citicorp merged in 1998, Paula Scher of Pentagram created the Citi logo, retaining a reference to the insurance group’s former symbol. The curved line represented the umbrella’s canopy, while the vertical stroke of the “t” served as its handle. The word “financial” was added to the lettering for the financial division.

Before the transition to the OneMain name in 2011, the logo consisted of the single lowercase word “citifinancial.” It used a sans-serif typeface similar in style to Helvetica Rounded. The dark blue had a slight purple tint. The opening “citi” portion used heavier strokes, while “financial” was thinner. The weight difference distinguished the banking group’s name from the division’s business description within a single word. A thick, gently curved red arc extended over the letters “i,” “t,” and “i,” connecting the division’s identity to its parent company’s logo.

The business began long before the CitiFinancial and OneMain Financial names appeared. In 1912, Alexander Edward Duncan founded Commercial Credit Company in Baltimore. Following a series of acquisitions and mergers, the business became part of Citigroup and took the CitiFinancial name. Its U.S. consumer lending business was later renamed OneMain Financial to establish an identity separate from Citi.

2011 – 2018

The idea of an American town’s main street inspired thename  OneMain Financial. Combining “one” and “main,” the name referred to Main Street, while “Financial” identified the company’s line of business. The name reflected the work of local branches and personal conversations with borrowers in both large cities and small communities.

The U.S. branch network’s new name was announced in 2010 as part of CitiFinancial’s reorganization and preparations for a sale. Branches began operating under the new name in the summer of 2011. The neighborhood theme carried into an emblem made up of 5 houses. Their pentagonal silhouettes were evenly spaced around a circle, with their roofs pointing toward the center. The space between them formed a white five-pointed star.

The company called the arrangement a “stellar cul-de-sac.” The phrase combined the image of a star with a residential street ending in a turnaround. The houses’ corners were slightly rounded, while their geometric silhouettes remained intact. 4 houses used shades of blue ranging from light to dark, and the bottom house was crimson red. Marketing executive Jim Ryan linked the red-and-blue combination to the company’s American heritage.

Dark blue OneMain lettering appeared to the right. The capital “O” and “M” marked the beginnings of the 2 words joined within the name. The bold sans-serif lettering combined consistent stroke widths, rounded forms, and moderate spacing. Its structure resembled typefaces such as Avenir. In the full version, the smaller word “Financial” appeared beneath the main line. The shortened version consisted of the emblem and OneMain lettering.

The rollout covered a network of over 1,300 branches. Sign contractor Federal Heath completed a project for 1,100 locations in 2011.

2018 – today

OneMain Financial Logo

After using the emblem with 5 houses, the company adopted a wordmark featuring the full OneMain Financial name. Both parts became blue, with different stroke weights distinguishing them. OneMain retained its bold lettering and capital “O” and “M.” Financial begins with a capital “F” and uses thin lettering.

The sans-serif typeface resembles Museo Sans or Nunito. The blue has an ocean-like hue. In the horizontal version, a space separates the words on a single line. In the 2-line version, Financial sits beneath OneMain. The shared color unifies the name, while the bold lettering gives the main name greater prominence.

Corporate changes preceded the move to a shared brand. In 2015, Springleaf acquired OneMain Financial from Citigroup. The combined holding company became OneMain Holdings, and in 2016, Springleaf branches adopted the OneMain Financial name and logo. The design still featured the 5 colored houses. Beneath OneMain appeared the tagline “Lending Made Personal.” It connected the image of a residential community with personal conversations between employees and borrowers at local branches. The wordmark later became the mark for both OneMain Holdings, Inc. and its operating subsidiary, OneMain Financial.

DeSantis Breindel developed the brand identity. Its work centered on supporting customers’ financial well-being and 3 service principles: empathy, convenience, and encouragement. The agency established 2 core colors and shared guidelines for branded materials. In 2022, the OneMain Financial project received a Highly Commended distinction in the financial services identity category at the Transform Awards North America.
