Since the story is about a pirate crew, the authors of One Piece created the Straw Hat logo featuring the Jolly Roger. However, it’s not a typical symbol of sea bandits; rather, it’s a skull adapted to the manga’s artistic style. And the emblem must include a straw hat, as it is the distinguishing mark of the crew’s leader, Monkey D. Luffy.
The Straw Hat Pirates began as a concept in the mid-1990s, when Eiichiro Oda published two Romance Dawn pilot stories in Weekly Shōnen Jump. Both introduced Monkey D. Luffy, a boy in a straw hat who dreamed of becoming a pirate. On July 22, 1997, Shueisha launched One Piece as a full series in the same magazine as Naruto and Dragon Ball, placing Oda’s work in one of manga’s toughest readership battles.
At the beginning, Luffy had no ship and no crew. His first recruit was Roronoa Zoro, a bounty hunter and three-sword fighter freed from Marine custody. Nami joined after the Arlong Park conflict, when Luffy defeated Arlong and ended her forced service to him. Usopp entered after Syrup Village, while Sanji joined after the Baratie arc, where the crew faced Don Krieg’s fleet and Mihawk.
On October 20, 1999, Toei Animation premiered the One Piece anime on Fuji TV, with Mayumi Tanaka voicing Luffy. The screen version expanded the crew’s reach beyond print. Tony Tony Chopper joined after Drum Island as the doctor. Nico Robin came aboard after Alabasta. Franky became the shipwright after Water 7 and Enies Lobby, building the Thousand Sunny. At the same time, Brook joined after Thriller Bark as the musician.
Jinbe, a fish-man and former sea warlord, became the tenth member during the Whole Cake Island arc after earlier delays. By the mid-2000s, One Piece was among Weekly Shōnen Jump’s “Big Three” alongside Naruto and Bleach. By 2022, the manga had passed 500 million copies worldwide, and the anime had exceeded 1,000 episodes. In August 2023, Netflix released an eight-episode live-action version of the East Blue arcs.
Meaning and History
The earliest mention of the Straw Hat Pirates appears in Episode 3 of Chapter 5 of One Piece, when swordsman Roronoa Zoro joins Monkey D. Luffy as the crew’s first member. The team got its name after the hat Luffy takes off only in emergencies. This hat was passed down to him by the leader of the Red Hair Pirates, known as “Red-Haired” Shanks. He gave the boy the hat as a symbol of his faith that the boy would become a great pirate and return the gift.
From the backstory of the pirate band, it becomes clear where the original name came from and why the logo depicts a Jolly Roger in an elegant headpiece. This is part of the narrative canvas of One Piece, on which almost the entire ideology of the manga and the eponymous anime is built.
The emblem of the Straw Hat Pirates contains the classic symbol of all sea robbers, the Jolly Roger. But it does not look traditional because the artists adopted a cartoonish style in creating it. The skull and bones are formed from simple geometric shapes: circles, semicircles, ovals, trapezoids, and ellipses. Meanwhile, the upper part of the skull is separated from the protruding lower jaw by two rows of large teeth, which form a crazy smile. The eye and nose areas are black voids, contrasting against the white background. Notably, the top half of the skull is covered by an orange hat with a wide red ribbon. This is exactly how the headpiece of the pirate group leader, Monkey D. Luffy, looks.
What is Straw Hat?
Straw Hat is the nickname of Monkey D. Luffy, the main character of the manga and anime One Piece. He leads a pirate crew called the Straw Hat Pirates, also known as the Straw Hat Crew and Mugiwara Pirates. Despite the small crew size (only 10 people), this group is very strong and successful. A bounty is set for each of its members.
In the One Piece storyline, Luffy created the Straw Hat Pirates’ logo. But due to his poor artistic abilities, another crew member, Usopp, had to draw the symbol. The emblem, a stylized Jolly Roger, is depicted on the pirate flag and on the sails of their ships.
Font and Colors
The creators of the Straw Hat Pirates graphic symbol did it without inscriptions. A logo with text would have been too cluttered since it already has many details. The color scheme is also varied: the artists drew an orange hat with a red ribbon to break up the Jolly Roger’s classic black-and-white combination.
