Trend Micro: Brand overview

The history of Trend Micro began in 1988 in Los Angeles, when Taiwanese entrepreneur Steve Chang, together with his wife, Jenny, and her sister, Eva Chen, founded the company. Initial capital was obtained by selling a security key to Rainbow Technologies. Anticipating an increase in hacker attacks, Chang decided to create antivirus software.

After several years, the company moved its headquarters to Taipei and later opened an office in Japan. Trend Micro was the first to develop the PC-cillin antivirus, and later released LANDesk network protection products in collaboration with Intel. In 1998, Trend Micro shares were listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and since 1999, they have been traded on NASDAQ.

In the early 2000s, the company’s antivirus software was used by popular online services, including MSN Hotmail. Over time, Trend Micro actively acquired technology startups Kelkea and Identum, and later AffirmTrust and TippingPoint.
