UMC (United Microelectronics Corporation) Logo PNG
Microchip manufacturing is the foundation of modern electronics, from mobile devices to automotive systems. Silicon wafers undergo complex processing stages, where adherence to specifications affects the performance of end devices. The United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) is a Taiwanese company specializing in contract semiconductor manufacturing and chip production for various industries.
United Microelectronics Corporation was founded on May 22, 1980, as Taiwan’s first private semiconductor manufacturing company. The Industrial Technology Research Institute established it as part of a government program to develop the semiconductor industry. The company’s headquarters is located in Hsinchu. This city became the center of Taiwan’s microelectronics sector.
In 1985, UMC was listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. In 1995, the company changed its strategy, switching to contract semiconductor manufacturing. In 1996, independent design companies MediaTek and Novatek were spun off. They later became market leaders.
In 1999, the company opened the Fab 12A plant for 12-inch wafers. In 2000, UMC was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In the following years, the company expanded its production geography. In 2004, the Fab 12i plant was launched in Singapore. In 2013, the company acquired a plant in Suzhou. In 2016, a manufacturing complex in Xiamen began operations.
In 2019, the company acquired USJC, a Japanese company, and strengthened its position in the Asian market. In 2020, a dispute with the U.S. Department of Justice was settled. The company paid 60 million dollars and maintained its business reputation.
In 2024, UMC announced cooperation with Intel. The joint project aims to develop a 12-nanometer platform. Production is planned for Arizona. The launch is expected between 2026 and 2027. By the end of 2024, the company’s revenue reached 232.3 billion New Taiwan dollars. The 22- and 28-nanometer technologies accounted for one-third of total turnover.
The company continued to expand production capacity and to develop its project in Singapore. Cooperation with Intel remained a priority. By the third quarter, revenue amounted to 59.1 billion New Taiwan dollars. The gross margin reached 29.8 percent. These results confirmed the company’s position among the world’s leading contract chip manufacturers.
Meaning and History
What is UMC?
A Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer ranked third in the world, with a market share of about 8.5%, behind TSMC and GlobalFoundries. The company was one of the first to launch mass production of chips on 300 mm wafers and to implement the 28 nm process. Its plants are located in Taiwan and Singapore, spanning from half-micron lines to modern technologies. Production is entirely contract-based, without in-house designs. About one-fifth of its revenue comes from 14–28 nm nodes. The main facilities are in Hsinchu and Tainan, where Fab 12A produces more than 50 thousand 300 mm wafers per month.
1980 – today
The name UMC comes from the full name United Microelectronics Corporation. The wording reflects the company’s origins and field of business. The project brought together government research centers, engineering personnel, and manufacturing technologies. “Microelectronics” refers to the production of integrated circuits, while “Corporation” identifies its status as an industrial corporation. The Chinese name is written as 聯華電子. The abbreviation 聯電 frequently appears in Taiwanese business media and corporate materials.
The abbreviation entered corporate use during the company’s early years and later became its primary international name. It remained in use after the transition to contract manufacturing, the opening of new facilities, and the company’s expansion into the global market. The logo changed very little, preserving a connection between different periods of the company’s history.
Large blue letters with heavy proportions and a bold weight form the foundation of the logo. Their shape resembles Microgramma Bold and Eurostile Extended Bold. The composition is based entirely on the lettering. The main emphasis falls on the name UMC, which the company uses in international markets.
