Whistling Straits’ history started in the middle of the 1990s when Herbert V. Kohler Jr., the Executive Chairman of Kohler Co., decided to build a top-notch golf course in Wisconsin along the beaches of Lake Michigan. Kohler purchased a 560-acre tract of land that had served as an anti-aircraft artillery installation.
Kohler asked renowned golf architect Pete Dye to help fulfill his ambitious proposal. Although the ground was flat and devoid of natural dunes, Dye was entrusted with designing a course that would evoke the classic links courses of Scotland and Ireland.
