The American Athletic Conference traces its legal history to the Big East, founded May 31, 1979, through an initiative led by Providence coach Dave Gavitt. Football began in 1991 with Miami as a full member and Rutgers, Temple, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia as football affiliates. The new format created a lasting divide between football programs and Catholic schools focused on basketball.
Realignment intensified in 2004 and 2005, when three major football members, including Boston College, left for the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Big East rebuilt by adding the University of South Florida, Louisville, and Cincinnati, yet the internal split remained. In December 2012, seven basketball schools announced a separate organization. They later purchased the Big East name, historical records, and Madison Square Garden tournament rights.
The remaining group became the American Athletic Conference in 2013. Houston, Central Florida, Memphis, and SMU joined its lineup. Two members departed in 2014, while East Carolina, Tulane, and Tulsa entered. Navy joined for football in 2015, Wichita State arrived in 2017, and Connecticut returned to the renamed Big East in 2020.
A conference member reached the College Football Playoff in 2021, the first Group of Five program to qualify. Three leading schools then moved to the Big 12 in 2023 after paying $18 million each to leave early, followed by another departure in 2024. Six Conference USA schools joined in 2023, and Army entered in 2025.

The conference’s main office is located in Irving, Texas. It coordinates tournaments and prepares players for the NFL and NBA ranks.
2013 – 2016
The union’s first logo was a large, monumental letter “A” elevated above the surface. The emblem emerged following significant changes within the group: 14 members left the organization, and the remaining 10 adopted a new name, the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The letter “A” visually represents the new name.
A red star is drawn in the center of the letter, appearing as if falling from the sky. It is associated with the conference participants, who stand out for their abilities, talent, and skill in the game.
Beneath the letter “A” are two red lines, between which the word “American” is written in uppercase blue letters. The rest of the name is rendered in small black font. The emphasis on the first word is intended to distinguish it from the Atlantic Coast Conference, also abbreviated as AAC.
Additionally, a blue gradient is used, giving the text a glowing, shimmering effect that enhances the union’s visual appearance.
2016 – 2017
The updated symbol took on a more mature and serious appearance. The dark blue color replaced the previous gradient, giving the emblem a solid look and emphasizing its professional character. During this period, the conference decided against expanding its roster of athletes and focused instead on improving the skill levels of its existing members.
The primary focus was to enhance the training process and improve performance metrics. Making the logo flat and removing three-dimensional elements highlighted sports as the organization’s driving force.
2017 – today
The 2017 update was tied to the conference’s expansion, which required changes in the symbolism. The text was removed to emphasize the letter “A,” which became the central element of the new design. The letter conveys the image of an athlete in a blue uniform with a falling star, reinforcing associations with goal-oriented focus and dedication.
The color palette underscores hard work, leadership, and patriotism, highlighting the pursuit of excellence and victory.
