Atlanta Gladiators: Brand overview

The Atlanta Gladiators’ history started in 1995 in Mobile, Alabama, as the Mobile Mysticks, playing in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). The Mysticks’ name referenced the mystical societies behind city carnivals. Under coach Jeff Pyle, the Mysticks reached the playoffs five times but never advanced beyond the second round.

In 2003, the club relocated to Gwinnett County, Georgia, becoming the Gwinnett Gladiators. Their first game was played on October 24, 2003, and they won. The Gladiators quickly established an affiliation with the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers. The 2005-2006 season was the best in the club’s history, as it won the conference championship and advanced to the Kelly Cup Finals, ultimately losing to the Alaska Aces.

In 2015, the team adopted the name Atlanta Gladiators to emphasize its connection to the Atlanta region. The team regularly hosts themed matches honoring former Atlanta NHL clubs. The Gladiators remain the region’s sole professional hockey team, playing home games at Gas South Arena in Duluth.

2003 – 2015

Gwinnett Gladiators Logo 2003

Fans chose the new name “Gladiators” through a “Name the Team” contest. Later, the club unveiled a logo based on ancient arena warriors. At its core, the design featured a muscular gladiator in dark garnet armor accented with gold detailing and black outlines, representing strength and aggression.

The gladiator holds a large sword in his raised right hand and a shield in his left hand, reflecting the team’s competitive spirit. Below the figure, the team’s name “GLADIATORS” appears in bold, angular white letters outlined in gold. Beneath it, the name “GWINNETT” appears in gold uppercase letters, signifying regional affiliation.

The style emphasizes connections to ancient Roman culture, giving the emblem historical charisma and distinctive club character.

2015 – 2019

In 2015, the team highlighted its association with a major city by changing its location name to reflect this. The logo underwent a minor update to emphasize its geographical identity.

Visually, the symbol remained largely unchanged, except that the lower portion replaced “Gwinnett” with “Atlanta.” The city name appeared in uppercase letters, neatly curving along the black banner beneath “Gladiators.” The clear, angular font maintained the logo’s sporting aesthetic, accented with gold highlights.

2019 – today

The Atlanta Gladiators updated their logo while preserving key symbolism and introducing new colors and typography. At the center is still the figure of a gladiator in a fighting stance, ready to attack. His profile view shows the full power and determination of the club’s character. The warrior thrusts his sword forward and holds a shield firmly with his other hand. The helmet is designed in an antique style, with a crest and a closed visor, emphasizing the fighter’s discipline and harsh nature.

The main feature of the new design is its use of different colors. Instead of the previous saturated tones, lighter and more modern shades were used: light blue, dark blue, and muted yellow. Yellow highlights elements of the protective gear and the helmet, adding strength and symbolizing protection and resilience. Blue and dark blue outline the sword and shield, as well as accents on the helmet. White with black outlines is used to depict the body’s open areas and to highlight the gladiator’s musculature.

Changes were also made in the text part of the logo. The name GLADIATORS is now separated from the main image and placed beneath it. It is set in a large, neat typeface with wide letter spacing and in dark blue. Below the main wordmark, the word ATLANTA appears in a simpler form, set in a sans-serif font. To visually unite the elements, a horizontal, muted yellow line is added, completing the emblem’s structure.

The warrior is presented as a symbol of strength and protection, and the color combination gives the emblem energy. The logo looks modern while still preserving classic traits of sports identity with elements of heraldic design.
