The Belchite logo refers to a place where the past has frozen. The city’s ruins attract travelers, archaeologists, and history enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into a bygone era. Once full of life, the place was transformed by events into a silent witness to the past, preserving echoes of history within its walls.

Belchite: Brand overview

Belchite, situated in the Aragon region of Spain, has a history that dates back to the Iberian tribes. Its first written mention dates to the 12th century, when King Alfonso I granted the town privileges after capturing it from Muslim control in 1119.

During the Middle Ages, Belchite prospered as a commercial and agricultural center, fortified by defensive walls. Key structures included the 14th-century Mudéjar-style Church of San Martín de Tours. By the 16th and 17th centuries, it was renowned for wine and olive oil production and was home to landmarks such as the Monastery of San Rafael and the Church of San Agustín.

The town further expanded in the 18th century, introducing Baroque architecture, as exemplified by the Town Hall and the Church of San Juan. However, Belchite faced severe devastation during the Spanish Civil War, particularly in the brutal Battle of Belchite (August–September 1937), where Nationalist and Republican forces clashed, leaving the historic center destroyed.

In 1939, Franco’s government decided against rebuilding the original town and instead created a new settlement nearby with modern amenities. By the 1970s, interest in preserving Belchite’s ruins as a historical site increased, leading to tourism development in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 2002, the old town was officially recognized as a cultural heritage landmark of Aragon. From 2010 onward, facilities were improved to accommodate visitors, solidifying Belchite’s status as a significant symbol of Spain’s history.

The work on the tourist brand of Belchite was entrusted to the studio Arnaiz & Partners, with designer Luis López Luero as the project’s author. The city authorities set the task of updating the city’s visual image and highlighting the unique cultural heritage preserved among the ruins. The public presentation took place in 2021 as part of the cultural tourism development program.

The Belchite emblem is based on a system of arched forms that echo the silhouettes of the preserved buildings of the historic quarter. The visual reference is most evident in comparison with the ruins of the Church of San Agustín, destroyed during the Civil War. The horizontal line at the bottom of the composition represents the layer of Earth that preserves the memory of past tragic events.

The typography was adapted to the proportions of the arched elements. The Montserrat typeface in a bold sans-serif style was used as the basis. The inscription is built on the contrast between the capital letter “B” and lowercase characters, which supports the balance between formality and modernity.

The logo’s palette is built on a gradient fill, with yellow gradually shifting to red-brown and ending in a green stripe at the bottom of the emblem. It conveys the natural shades of the surrounding areas, including the colors of agricultural land, ochre soil, and the stone remains of buildings. It reflects seasonal and daily changes of light in the Aragon region.

The symbol and the name of the city are arranged as a unified system. Their structure ensures compactness and consistency of perception. Altogether, the elements of the visual concept form the image of Belchite as a place of memory, where historical ruins serve as a draw for cultural tourism.
