Bendy first appeared in 2016, created by animator Temen Cody, who drew inspiration from iconic 1920s and 1930s cartoons, including early versions of Disney’s Mickey Mouse. Originally designed as the cheerful mascot of the fictional Joey Drew Studios, Bendy’s character underwent a darker transformation within the game’s narrative.
The public was introduced to Bendy in February 2017 with the release of the first chapter of Bendy and the Ink Machine, in which his presence was felt through posters and cardboard cutouts, building suspense. His sinister persona, known as the Ink Demon, fully emerged through subsequent chapters released between 2017 and 2018, becoming a central part of the game’s conflict.
In 2018, the game’s full version provided greater depth to Bendy’s character, emphasizing themes of corrupted creativity and ambition. Following commercial success, merchandise such as comics and toys featuring Bendy was launched in 2019, expanding the franchise beyond games.
Between 2020 and 2021, Joey Drew Studios published novels and other books that further explored Bendy’s backstory and the game’s lore. The 2022 release, Bendy and the Dark Revival, continued developing his character, introducing additional narrative layers.
In 2023, despite a slower production pace, Joey Drew Studios continued to support existing titles by releasing updates and special collector’s editions, thereby solidifying Bendy’s status in the indie horror gaming scene.

What is Bendy?
Classic animation films inspired this character, and became the central figure in a well-known video game. Originally depicted as a friendly protagonist in old cartoons, he transformed into a sinister creature after the ink machine appeared, roaming the abandoned studio. His distinctive features include a wide grin, horns, and white gloves reminiscent of classic animation designs, but in the game world, he has taken on a dark, menacing form. The character pursues the protagonist, symbolizing the studio’s past glory and the darker side of the entertainment industry.
2017 – today
The first impression of the emblem is connected with the atmosphere of an old cinema. Uneven letter lines, as if applied with thick paint, resemble streaks on film and convey the trembling of a hand-drawn animation frame. This effect immerses the viewer in the game’s world even before they encounter the characters and storyline.
The basis of the construction is the word “BENDY.” All letters are uppercase, stretched horizontally, and balanced through their close proportions. The font is deliberately rough, with uneven stroke thickness, which enhances the impression of being handcrafted. The internal rhythms of the typeface create visual noise reminiscent of 1920s–30s posters.
In the initial letter “B,” the silhouette of the character Bendy is integrated, presented as a cartoon demon with a grin and horns. The letter loses its function within the text and assumes the role of a sign associated with character identity. The origins of this method can be traced to the aesthetics of early Fleischer Studios cartoons, in which characters interacted with textual elements.
The color scheme is limited to black and white. The contrasting duo supports the ink theme and sets a dark tone.
In the typeface, the emphasis is placed on intentional imperfection, uneven strokes, and rough texture, which become its expressive features. 2022
The previous version of the logo was based on a more accurate text presentation, but the new interpretation shifted toward a more untidy, texturally expressive approach. Now the inscription “BENDY” appears as if it were printed with a worn cliché or applied by hand with thick paint. This method reinforces the association with decay and disintegration, which aligns with the game’s content.
The typeface remained uppercase and massive, but its construction became less stable. The lines are distorted, the edges irregular, and breaks and losses are visible in the contours. The texture replicates the aesthetic of old typographic forms, whose wear indicates repeated use. Visual unevenness resonates with the technique of hand-drawn animation, where frames often produce a trembling effect.
The texture of the letters refers to ink drips and smears. Distorted shapes and streaks convey an atmosphere of instability, reinforcing the storyline concept of a studio descending into chaos. The resemblance to intertitles of silent cartoons of the 1920s is strengthened by rounded corners and the chaotically shifting stroke thickness. The atmosphere of an old cinema is recreated.
The updated Bendy emblem communicates the fusion of retro animation and horror elements. The emphasized defectiveness of the contour became a metaphor for worn film, where irregularities and scratches are inseparable from the viewer’s experience.
