Brenntag was founded in 1874 by Philipp Mühsam in Berlin. Initially, it was a trading company dealing in eggs and agricultural products. In 1879, it began supplying pharmaceutical goods. Since 1912, the company has focused its operations on chemicals. In 1923, the enterprise was transformed into a joint-stock company and introduced its first logo.
In 1937, Mühsam sold the company to Hugo Stinnes Jr. under pressure from the regime. After the war, Brenntag resumed operations under the control of the Stinnes Group. In the 1950s, the company entered international markets, including the United States and Eastern Europe.
In 1965, after the VEBA Group acquired Stinnes, the company gained new growth opportunities. By the late 1980s, it had branches in Prague, Warsaw, and Moscow.
In the 1990s, it began active expansion and a series of acquisitions. These steps allowed Brenntag to become the largest chemical distributor in Europe. In 2002, the company acquired Holland Chemical International. In 2004, it gained control over Biesterfeld Chemistribution.
In 2010, the company’s shares were listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. In 2011, Brenntag entered the Chinese market by acquiring Zhong Yung International Chemical. In 2012, a large-scale reorganization was completed.
In 2013, the company acquired the American Spectrum Chemical Manufacturing Corp. In 2014, it purchased the German firm Bergman & Beving. In 2015, Brenntag acquired the Italian company Chimar Hellas. In 2017, a new headquarters opened in Essen, and the British company Stathera was acquired.
In 2018, Brenntag acquired Pacific Chem, a Singapore-based company. In 2022, the company purchased the Israeli Europack, strengthening its presence in Asia and the Middle East. In 2021, the management was headed by Christian Kohlpaintner.
From 2023 to 2025, the company will carry out structural transformations. It is developing the specialty chemicals segment, implementing artificial intelligence technologies, and expanding its presence in India, Vietnam, and Central Asia.

What is Brenntag?
A German group from Essen is one of the global leaders in chemical distribution. It operates in more than 70 countries, managing a network of offices and warehouses that serve about 180 thousand customers. The assortment includes over 10 thousand types of industrial and specialty chemicals for the food, pharmaceutical, construction, oil and gas, and automotive industries. Starting with agricultural trading, the company moved into oil and chemical products and became Germany’s largest distributor. Its operations are divided into two segments. Essentials covers basic chemicals, and Specialties includes specialized ingredients.
1990s – 2022
By 2022, the previous Brenntag logo reflected an earlier period in the company’s operations. The blue arrow made from horizontal stripes had been used for more than 20 years and recalled transportation, distribution, and logistics. Brenntag eventually became a major international distributor of chemical products, so its main business required a new image. The company retained its name after the update, while a new emblem replaced the striped arrow.
Brenntag’s history began in Berlin in 1874. Philipp Mühsam opened a wholesale business selling eggs, grain, and other agricultural products. The company began trading chemicals in 1912. In 1937, it adopted the name Brennstoff-, Chemikalien- und Transport-Aktiengesellschaft. Brenntag was formed from parts of the words Brennstoff, Chemikalien, and Transport, which referred to fuel, chemicals, and transportation.
The company later discontinued its fuel operations and focused on chemical products. The Brenntag name remained in use even as the business changed. It preserved a connection with the company’s early history and became the official name of the international group.
In the new logo, the BRENNTAG wordmark appears on the left. The name uses uppercase dark blue letters with smooth terminals. The typeface resembles Frutiger and Univers. The letters have a slight rightward slant and form a compact line.
A figure composed of two elongated sections with rounded ends appears on the right. The upper section points to the right and uses red and light pink tones. The lower section faces the opposite direction and combines dark blue with light gray. The sections have similar shapes but are slightly offset from one another. The new emblem presented an image associated with an international chemical distribution company.
2022 – today
Brenntag introduced its updated brand identity at Capital Markets Day on November 10, 2022. The rebranding formed part of the Strategy to Win program and included the logo, typography, and corporate materials. The German agency Mutabor developed the project in collaboration with Brenntag’s marketing team. Before beginning the work, the specialists studied the market, competitor identities, employee opinions, and feedback from external partners.
The new emblem became the main change. A stylized letter “B” with flowing lines and rounded edges replaced the former arrow. A vertical opening appears in the upper section, while a curved gap divides the lower section. The color transitions from pink-purple at the bottom to blue and light blue at the top.
The logo has a horizontal structure. The colored letter “B” appears on the left, with the BRENNTAG name on the right. The wordmark uses uppercase dark purple letters with even terminals. The custom Brenntag Sans typeface was developed for use in the logo and corporate materials. Its form also resembles Gotham and Montserrat.
