Civilization began in September 1991, when MicroProse released Sid Meier’s Civilization, created by Sid Meier and Bruce Shelley. The game followed human development from the Stone Age to space travel and helped define the 4X strategy format. In 1996, Meier, Jeff Briggs, and Brian Reynolds left MicroProse and founded Firaxis Games. After years of licensing disputes, the studio returned to the series with Civilization III in 2001 and Civilization IV in 2005, when Take-Two Interactive acquired Firaxis for its 2K division.
Civilization V introduced hexagonal tiles and one military unit per space in 2010. Civilization VI followed in October 2016 with districts placed directly on the map and a separate cultural development tree. Firaxis later expanded it through Rise and Fall in 2018 and Gathering Storm in 2019.
Civilization VII was officially announced at Summer Game Fest on June 7, 2024. A full gameplay presentation followed at Gamescom in August, where Gwendoline Christie was revealed as narrator. The game divided history into Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern Ages. Leaders and civilizations were separated, letting players switch civilizations between eras.
Civilization VII launched on February 11, 2025, for Windows, macOS, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Xbox One. Deluxe Edition buyers received access on February 5. The release entered a market shared with Humankind and Total War, while the Civilization franchise had surpassed 70 million copies sold.

This is a new part of the famous turn-based strategy series, in which players will have to develop civilizations, starting in ancient times and progressing through different historical eras. To do this, you must build cities, discover technologies, conduct diplomacy, or participate in military conflicts. Victory is achieved in many ways through cultural influence, scientific achievement, or military superiority. The new version will feature improved diplomacy, a redesigned resource management system, and improved combat experience.

The letter “C” features hexagons with symbols, an intentional reference to Civilization’s gameplay mechanics, in which the map consists of hexagonal tiles. Each symbol represents a different aspect of life and development: a gear for industry, a hammer and an anvil for construction, and a ship’s wheel for navigation and exploration. These elements hint at the various paths of progress and the strategic decisions players make to shape history.
