Equipment for the aviation, defense, and industrial sectors requires high precision and reliable performance under demanding conditions. Such systems are used in engineering where stable performance and parameter control are critical. The Curtiss-Wright logo is associated with a company that develops and manufactures components and systems for the aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors.

Curtiss-Wright: Brand overview

Curtiss-Wright Corporation was created on July 5, 1929, through the merger of “Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor” and Wright Aeronautical. Glenn Curtiss and the Wright brothers founded these companies. With a capital of $ 75 million, the new corporation immediately became the largest aviation company in the United States and one of the world’s industry leaders.

During World War II, Curtiss-Wright produced aircraft engines, propellers, and airplanes, including the P-40 Warhawk. The company supported the implementation of key military programs. Over the course of the war, more than 140,000 engines and 29,000 aircraft were produced. After the conflict ended, production volumes decreased. The company began shifting toward civilian technologies.

In the 1950s, Curtiss-Wright diversified its activities and expanded into the electronic, metallurgical, and scientific sectors. A nuclear research division was created. In the following decades, the company strengthened its position in defense technologies and industrial equipment. Gradually, it shifted its focus from aircraft manufacturing to high-tech systems and solutions.

Since the early 2000s, Curtiss-Wright has expanded through acquisitions in the aerospace, energy, and defense industries. By 2023, annual revenue reached $ 2.86 billion. In 2024, steady growth was expected.

Curtiss-Wright remains a supplier of advanced solutions for aviation, energy, and defense. In the nuclear sector, the company produces pumps, mechanisms, and systems for reactors, including the AP1000 model by Westinghouse. Revenue from the nuclear segment in the previous year amounted to about $ 300 million. The plan for the next five years is to double this figure.

The company’s sales increased by 11.7 percent and reached $ 876.6 million. This was driven by higher demand in the naval and energy segments. The order backlog exceeded $ 3.8 billion. The company received the Military Aerospace Electronics Innovators Awards 2025 for achievements in avionics and embedded systems.

Meaning and History

What is Curtiss-Wright?

An American diversified corporation from Davidson, North Carolina, formed after the merger of Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor and Wright Aeronautical. During World War II, it was the largest aircraft manufacturer in the United States. After the war, it sold its aviation division and focused on producing components for the aerospace, defense, energy, and industrial sectors. Operations include three segments: aerospace and industrial, defense electronics, and naval and energy equipment.

1929 – 2014

Curtiss-Wright Logo 1929

The name Curtiss-Wright combines two lines of American aviation history. Curtiss comes from Glenn Curtiss, founder of Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company and one of the pioneers of aviation. Wright came from Wright Aeronautical, which was connected to the businesses of Orville and Wilbur Wright. The dual name joined aircraft manufacturer Curtiss with aircraft engine developer Wright.

Curtiss-Wright Corporation was formed on July 5, 1929, through the combination of Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company, Wright Aeronautical Corporation, and related businesses. The official timeline includes 12 organizations. A more detailed description of the structure mentions 18 affiliated companies and 29 subsidiaries. The corporation’s shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on August 22, 1929. The names Curtiss, Wright, and Curtiss-Wright appeared on aircraft and engines depending on the division and model.

The company used the full last names in its early advertising. An advertisement published in Aero Digest in 1932 featured a black circle containing the white handwritten words Curtiss Wright. The words appeared on two levels, with two horizontal lines running between them. The circular emblem was used in advertising and on products.

Business documents used a different identity. On a historic certificate, the full name Curtiss-Wright Corporation appeared inside an ornamental frame. Aviation and industrial scenes surrounded it. This version suited the corporation’s stock market and manufacturing status. The advertising emblem presented the shorter brand name, while the certificate contained the legal name.

In the next version, CURTISS and WRIGHT appeared inside a solid red block. The white uppercase letters used a heavy italic sans-serif typeface. CURTISS occupied the upper line, while WRIGHT appeared below and was shifted to the right.

A narrow white bar with the same slant appeared above the letter “I” in CURTISS. It shared a vertical axis with the letters “I” in CURTISS and WRIGHT. Together, the three parts formed a vertical row. The red background joined the two lines into a single block.

The company later adopted a “CW” monogram. The circular emblem combined the letters “C” and “W,” while the words CURTISS-WRIGHT appeared beside it. The monogram preserved the initials of both last names in a compact form. It appeared in reports, on products, and in other applications. The company was already using this version in 2007. Later materials continued to use the same foundation.

After World War II, Curtiss-Wright expanded into aircraft components, control systems, nuclear equipment, electronics, and industrial machinery. Complete aircraft production gave way to other business areas, while the Curtiss and Wright names remained in the corporate name.

2014 – today

Curtiss-Wright Logo

In 2014, Curtiss-Wright introduced a logo based on the corporation’s full name. It was created for the public industrial group formed by combining Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company and Wright Aeronautical. Both last names appear in full and preserve the company’s connection to aviation history.

The long name is divided into two lines. CURTISS appears above, while WRIGHT is positioned below and farther to the right. The stepped layout arranges the name into a compact block. Both last names use uppercase letters and receive equal emphasis.

The letters “I” in CURTISS and WRIGHT share the same vertical axis. The upper one appears in the first line, while the lower one appears in the second. Their placement connects the two levels despite the shift in WRIGHT. The remaining letters have heavy forms, thick strokes, and a rightward slant. The wordmark uses a heavy sans-serif typeface with narrow letter spacing.

A short red hyphen appears after CURTISS. It preserves the Curtiss-Wright spelling and completes the upper line. The red mark is the only colored part of the logo. The hyphen joins the last names into one name even though they appear on separate levels.

The logo consists of the two-line wordmark and red hyphen. The Curtiss and Wright names connect the industrial group of 2014 with the businesses that merged in 1929. By this period, the corporation had expanded far beyond the production of complete aircraft.
