Convenient e-bikes and mopeds are available by subscription, eliminating the hassle of purchasing and maintaining them. The brand has redefined urban transportation, making it simple, comfortable, and accessible.

Dance: Brand overview

Dance was founded in Berlin in 2020 by entrepreneurs Christian Frese, Alexander Lupin, and Eric Quandt, previously known for co-founding the music platform SoundCloud. Their objective was to create an electric bicycle subscription service that simplifies urban mobility.

Initially, Dance launched a limited pilot program in Berlin to better understand customer preferences and the logistical demands of electric transportation. By late 2020, the startup had secured €15 million in investment from HV Capital, enabling it to scale its operations and develop custom-designed electric bikes tailored for subscription use.

In 2021, the company officially introduced its branded electric bicycle, the Dance One, which is optimized for city commuting, featuring a vandal-resistant frame and integration with a dedicated mobile app. That same year, operations expanded beyond Berlin to Hamburg and other German cities, and the brand added electric mopeds to its subscription offerings.

In 2022, Dance entered international markets, expanding into Vienna, Paris, and Madrid and adapting to each city’s unique transportation infrastructure. App improvements included enhanced trip tracking and navigation.

By 2023, Dance had introduced upgraded electric bicycles, increased the availability of mopeds, and launched a corporate subscription program. Early 2024 saw continued European expansion, ongoing fleet improvements, and enhanced technical support infrastructure.

2020 – today

Dance Logo

In the summer of 2020, the Berlin startup Dance engaged the Barcelona agency Hey to create its emblem. When the company launched its subscription-based e-bike rental service, the designers were tasked with developing a visual identity that would be harmonious in the digital environment and convey the service’s technological, convenient nature and its focus on urban users.

The symbol is placed to the left of the name. The outer black contour refers to the shape of the capital letter “D,” referencing the brand’s name. Inside is a triangle in negative space pointing to the right. Its outlines resemble the play icon in media players, reinforcing associations with digital media and hinting at progress and movement. In the composition, the symbol unites several layers of meaning, including a letter mark, the “play” pictogram, and a directional pointer.

The word Dance is typed in a sans-serif font with smooth curves and moderate stroke thickness. Geometry with calibrated proportions forms the basis of the typeface, giving it a sense of technological precision.

The palette uses only black, creating a universal look for the service and allowing the mark to be applied across both digital interfaces and the urban environment.

The Dance logo established associations with mobility, digital services, and the convenience of urban life, emphasizing the company’s focus on the technological side of e-bike rental.
