The Dayton Dragons’ history began in 1999, when a baseball franchise from Rockford, Illinois, relocated to Dayton, Ohio, a city that had been without professional baseball for nearly half a century. The team was named Dragons on May 3, 1999, and soon became an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds in the Midwest League.
The first home game took place on April 27, 2000, at the newly built Fifth Third Field before a sold-out crowd, with Hall of Famer Johnny Bench of the Reds throwing out the first pitch. Even in its debut season, the Dragons set attendance records for Class A baseball.
In 2006, pitcher Johnny Cueto threw the first individual no-hitter in team history. Over the years, future MLB stars Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, and Billy Hamilton played for the Dragons. In 2011, Hamilton set the Cincinnati Reds organization’s stolen base record.
On May 10, 2014, the Dragons marked their 1,000th consecutive sold-out home game; by August 2023, this streak had reached 1,500. Since 2020, the home stadium has been named Day Air Ballpark.
In March 2025, the Dragons celebrated their 25th anniversary with a game against the Cincinnati Reds, attended by nearly 9,000 fans.
