Hillsboro Hops: Brand overview

The Hillsboro Hops franchise began in 1977 as the Salem Senators in Oregon. In 1990, the team relocated to Yakima, Washington, and became the Yakima Bears, an affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. After facing difficulties in building a new stadium in Yakima, the team moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, in 2012, adopting the name “Hops” in honor of Oregon’s hop-growing industry.

Their first game was in June 2013, at home against the Eugene Emeralds. In their debut season, the team partnered with BridgePort Brewing Company and won Minor League Baseball’s award for best branding.

Hops won their first Northwest League championship in 2014, repeating success in 2015 and 2019. Following the league restructuring, the team entered the High-A classification, maintaining its affiliation with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In 2023, Veronica Gajownik became the team’s manager, making her the first woman to manage a High-A and professional baseball team. Hillsboro Hops plan to move into a new stadium scheduled to open in April 2026.

Hillsboro Hops Logo

The Hillsboro Hops baseball club’s logo was introduced in the fall of 2012, coinciding with the team’s relocation from Yakima to Hillsboro for the 2013 season. It was developed by Studio Simon under the direction of designer Dan Simon, with contributions from Nike specialists. From its debut to the present day, the design has remained unchanged, earning high recognition among fans and baseball enthusiasts.

The club’s primary identity symbol is an anthropomorphic hop cone wearing a baseball cap, complemented by the silhouette of Mount Hood, an Oregon landmark. The choice of the hop cone reflects regional characteristics, as Oregon is known for its beer industry and Hillsboro for its active hop production.

The hop cone is depicted in a stylized, dynamic manner, with its shapes defined by simplified yet confident green lines outlined in blue. On top of it sits a blue baseball cap with a contrasting white “H,” reinforcing the baseball theme and highlighting the team’s name.

Above the hop cone is a stylized line depicting the silhouettes of Mount Hood and a coniferous forest, rendered in shades of green and dark blue. This element symbolically represents the club’s natural environment and geographic location, adding regional context to the visual narrative.

The text portion of the logo consists of two elements. The word “Hops” is in large, white, script-style lettering characterized by smoothness and a strong sense of motion. It conveys emotion and suggests the movement of a ball or the energy of the game. Above it, the word “Hillsboro” appears in a calm, balanced sans-serif font in light blue tones, providing visual stability and emphasizing the city’s official name.

The color palette includes rich shades of green, dark blue, light blue, and white. These colors were chosen to convey freshness, energy, and the spirit of sports, as well as to reference brewing and the local natural environment.

In 2013, this logo was named “Best Logo/Brand of the Year” by the respected publication Ballpark Digest, earning high praise for its harmonious blend of baseball culture and the region’s brewing symbolism. In addition to the main version, an alternate design was created featuring a character named Barley and a hop cone depicted with a baseball bat, designed by Brian Gundell and based on Studio Simon’s core identity.

A simplified emblem was also developed for the team’s caps, featuring a stylized white-and-blue “H” on a dark blue background. First introduced in October 2012, it remains in use today, demonstrating clarity and recognizability even at minimal sizes.

The Hillsboro Hops logo serves as a symbol of regional identity, historical traditions, and Oregon’s active sports culture, successfully combining vibrant imagery with practical execution for wide use in marketing, merchandise, uniforms, and ticketing.
