In Italy, the company is known for its highway gas stations and, globally, for major projects in the extraction, processing, and supply of raw materials. The ENI logo is associated with a company that operates across a range of activities, from roadside services and fuel sales to international oil and gas operations. The emblem is perceived as a symbol of a group that is present in drivers’ daily lives and in the broader industry ecosystem.
ENI: Brand overview
ENI was established in 1953 by the Italian government at the initiative of Enrico Mattei. The goal was to strengthen the country’s energy independence. The new company combined AGIP, ANIC, and SNAM. The main focus was on gas production in the Po Valley and pipeline construction.
In 1957, ENI signed an agreement with Iran that became a turning point for the global oil industry. The company proposed a 75-to-25 profit-sharing model in favor of the producing country. This changed the balance of power in the global market. After the death of Enrico Mattei in 1962, the company continued expanding into North Africa and the Middle East.
In the 1970s, ENI became the main importer of Soviet gas. The contract with the USSR provided for long-term supplies through Austria. In the 1980s, the company faced corruption scandals, prompting restructuring and stronger internal controls.
Privatization of ENI began in 1995. The company’s shares were listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. In 2000, the largest oil field in Kazakhstan, called Kashagan, was discovered. In 2011, the company found the Zohr gas field off the coast of Egypt.
In 2015, production began at the Zohr field. In the following years, it invested in projects in Mozambique and Norway. The liquefied natural gas and offshore production sectors saw significant development.
After 2022, ENI increased gas supplies from Africa to compensate for reduced Russian volumes in Europe. In 2023, the company acquired Neptune Energy’s assets. In 2024, it began developing new fields in the Middle East.
The company remains one of Europe’s largest energy corporations. Its daily production is about 1.6 million barrels. It operates in more than sixty countries and is partially owned by the Italian state.
Meaning and History
What is ENI?
An Italian energy corporation with a full cycle of oil and gas operations. It conducts exploration, extraction, and liquefaction of oil and gas in more than forty countries. It handles the transportation and sales of natural gas and processes raw materials at its own facilities. Under the Agip brand, it produces oils and lubricants, while its subsidiaries Enipower and Versalis operate in the energy and petrochemical sectors. The company manages the largest network of gas stations in Italy and develops electricity and biofuel production.
1998 – 2009
Eni received its current name in 1953. Originally, it stood for “Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi.” The company was established on February 10, 1953, to operate in accordance with Italy’s state energy policy. Later, the long name was shortened to “Eni,” and the brand became known on the market under that form. In 1992, the former state-owned structure was transformed into the joint-stock company “Eni S.p.A.” as part of the privatization.
The first Eni logo was a square with a rich yellow background. The inner field was divided into 2 parts by a thin red line. In the upper area was an unusual black creature with 6 legs and a curled-up tail. Its head resembled a stylized dog’s muzzle with an open mouth, from which a red flame emerged.
Below the red line was the name “Eni.” The inscription used a sans-serif typeface. The uppercase “E” stood next to the lowercase “n” and “i.” A thin yellow contour ran through the letters, dividing them into 2 halves. The dot above the “i” was replaced by a small black square.
2009 (prototypes)
In 2009, Eni unveiled a prototype of the next version of its logo. In it, the company kept the familiar image of the black six-legged animal with an open mouth and a bright flame.
The symbol was placed inside an orange circle with a transition toward a yellow shade. The background looked dense and warm. Along the edge of the circle ran a pattern of diamonds arranged in a grid with perspective distortion. The name “Eni” was moved outside the circle and placed on the right at an angle.
2009 – 2023
The new version of the Eni logo unified the symbol and name into a single form. The basis was a rectangle with softly rounded corners and a yellow background. Inside it were 2 levels, with the symbol at the top and the company name at the bottom.
In the upper part was the black animal with 6 legs, shown in profile. Its rear legs stand on the upper edge of the yellow block. In contrast, the upper part of the figure extends beyond the rectangle, as if the animal is positioned on top of the yellow base rather than inside a closed frame.
Below is the “eni” inscription. The name is set in lowercase letters. The typeface has an unconventional form. Each letter is double-lined, and the inscription complements the unusual symbol above it.
2023 – today
In 2023, a revised brand image appeared. The logo kept the name and the six-legged symbol. Now both elements have the same yellow color, without the previous tonal separation.
The name “eni” is placed on the left and set in lowercase letters. The typeface became softer and more rounded. In style, it is close to “Rounded Sans” or “Avenir.” The letters look calm, and the inscription is perceived more simply.
On the right of the name, the famous six-legged animal remains. Decades later, the symbol’s authorship began to be attributed to the Italian sculptor “Luigi Broggini.” The figure represents a fantastic animal with a flame coming from its mouth and a mane flowing backward. The brand explains the 6 legs as 4 car wheels and 2 driver’s legs. The symbol conveys the connection between technology and the person through a single energy.
In the new version, the animal faces to the right and retains its familiar outlines. The main change concerned the color. The symbol and inscription are executed in the same shade of yellow.
