The Lost Surfboards logo symbolizes freedom, rebellious spirit, and passion for the waves. Its story began in a garage workshop, where the energy of the ocean, bold maneuvers, and the eternal search for the perfect ridge are embodied in every curve of the board. The name was born in the circle of friends for whom surfing, skateboarding, and snowboarding were a way of life. Boards have become an extension of riders, and endless experiments and water tests have turned the brand into a cult name among surfers worldwide.

Lost Surfboards: Brand overview

Matt Biolos founded Lost Surfboards in San Clemente, California, in 1985, marking the start of the Company. Matt began crafting surfboards by hand in his garage, experimenting with different shapes driven by his passion for surfing and understanding of wave dynamics. His early designs, like the wide-nose shortboard, quickly gained attention among local surfers due to their perfect blend of speed and control. The introduction of the Round Nose Fish became a major turning point, combining traditional fish-shaped boards with modern technology and appealing to surfers of all skill levels. Collaboration with professional surfers soon followed, leading to refined designs such as the Sub Driver and Mayhem. Adopting advanced resins and innovative molding processes made surfboards lighter and stronger, while computer simulations further improved performance. Production expanded, enabling an increased global presence through new distribution hubs at popular surfing spots. Models like Driver 2.0 set high-performance standards, and the introduction of 3D modeling and CNC shaping machines enhanced precision. Today, Lost Surfboards continues to innovate, constantly refining designs suited to various surfing styles and wave conditions, always committed to craftsmanship and to meeting the demands of surfers worldwide.

First

Lost Surfboards First Logo

American Surfboards Lost became well known, in part due to its unusual logo. It reflected the company’s slightly rebellious, relaxed, and free-spirited character. It connects to the street art style and surf culture atmosphere.

The main word, “Lost,” is designed in a large, bold, and vibrant graffiti style. The letters are thick, with bold outlines, as if spray-painted onto a wall. Three dots precede the word.

Underneath “Lost,” the “SURFBOARDS BY” clarification is placed compactly. It uses a calmer, clearer, larger, simpler font. It maintains the dynamics by following the same tilt as the word above.

The nearby word “Mayhem” is entirely different and positioned to the right of the main text. It curves in an arc, and the font resembles a Gothic or metal style, featuring sharp angles and elongated, pointed edges. It comes across as more aggressive, in contrast to the relaxed mood of the other inscriptions.

All black-and-white inscriptions form an unconventional image for the brand, tied to the spirit of freedom, surfing, and American street culture.

When Lost updated its logo, it became clear that surfing is an area of experimentation and freedom for them. The brand’s visual style changed: whereas it was previously soft and smooth, the logo gained sharpness and angularity, reflecting the company’s pursuit of an extreme, futuristic style.

Text and symbol merged into a unified whole, forming a cohesive composition. All the logo letters became heavier and more geometric, with uneven contours that resembled comic or graffiti drawings. The letter “L” is particularly interesting: it’s sharply elongated upwards, resembling something between a tower and a comic figure. The letter “s” took on a zigzag shape reminiscent of lightning, reinforcing the extreme effect.

The central focus is the letter “o,” depicted as a circle with an orbit crossing diagonally through it. The circle seems to reference a planet, and its orbit creates a cosmic feel that aligns with the brand’s extreme themes and direction, which focuses on producing surfboards.

The three dots to the left of the inscription changed: formerly round, they are now small rectangles, emphasizing the angularity and geometry of the overall composition.

The font became bold and sans-serif, with strong, sharp letterforms that create a sense of dynamism and speed. The color scheme remained minimalistic, strictly black and white, maintaining the character of a brand whose surfboards were always known for originality, boldness, and freedom of style.

Now

Lost Surfboards Logo

Yet another update to the visual identity. Lost Surfboards made the logo more visually stable and balanced while retaining the aggressive, rebellious style familiar from previous versions. The brand name and the additional word “Surfboards” are unified in style.

Among the notable changes, the lightning-shaped letter “s” disappeared; it became simpler and straighter, a letter like any other, slightly calming the inscription’s overall style while retaining the composition’s energy.

At the bottom, a wide black rectangle appeared featuring the inscription “SURFBOARDS.” It uses a strict, simple sans-serif font with clear, straightforward, uppercase letters in white. The black background of the rectangle merges with the outline of the upper letters, making the entire composition appear monolithic and cohesive.

The logo is executed in a black-and-white palette, which enhances the simplicity and clarity of the forms, aligning with the spirit of surf culture and the brand’s focus on producing original, stylish, and extreme surfboards.
