Computational tasks in artificial intelligence include training models, processing data, and running services on large-scale resources. This requires specialized cloud platforms and graphics processing units designed for high workloads. The Nebius logo is associated with a company that provides infrastructure for AI computing and works with cloud services to develop and deploy models.
Nebius Group’s history began within Yandex N.V., a structure created to manage Yandex’s international assets. In 2014, the company built a data center in Mäntsälä, Finland, with a capacity of about 40 megawatts. This facility served as the foundation for the future Nebius infrastructure.
In 2022, after sanctions were imposed, Arkady Volozh stepped down as CEO of Yandex N.V., and Roman Chernin took over. At the end of that year, the organization focused on developing artificial intelligence. ChatGPT’s emergence in 2022 accelerated this transition.
In July 2024, Yandex N.V. completed the asset separation and sold its Russian divisions for 475 billion rubles. After the transaction, the company was renamed Nebius Group. Trading on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange resumed on October 21, 2024, under the ticker NBIS.
Nebius had 1,300 employees and $2.8 billion in assets. The company’s portfolio comprised technology projects, including Avride. In 2024, Nebius opened a data center in Paris equipped with Nvidia H200 GPUs and announced plans to invest over one billion dollars in developing European artificial intelligence infrastructure.
In October 2024, Nebius launched the AI Studio platform to work with Llama and Mistral models. In the United States, construction began on a 300-megawatt facility in New Jersey and the expansion of the site in Kansas City. In Finland, the data center tripled its capacity.
At the same time, Nebius developed Toloka, TripleTen, and Avride. In 2024, the company attracted strategic investors, including Nvidia and Accel. Nebius signed a contract with Microsoft through 2031 to provide computing capacity.
Nebius became one of the largest independent companies in artificial intelligence infrastructure. In March 2025, Avride announced a partnership with Hyundai. In the fall, Uber invested up to $ 375 million to launch robotaxi operations in the United States.
Meaning and History
What is Nebius?
It is an international technology company headquartered in Amsterdam, formed after Yandex separated its foreign assets. Its main activity is developing cloud infrastructure and data centers for artificial intelligence computing. The company provides GPU clusters and computing power for generative models and machine learning tools. Its structure includes Toloka AI, Avride, and TripleTen. The corporation is one of Europe’s largest AI infrastructure providers.
2022 – 2023
Nebius emerged as a cloud platform brand before Yandex separated its Russian and international businesses. The name and initial brand identity began developing in 2022. The concept drew on a cloud and a Möbius strip. The former connected the platform to cloud computing, while the latter informed both the name and the shapes of the logo’s letters.
The project’s technological foundation developed within Yandex’s international infrastructure. The Netherlands-based Yandex N.V. was the group’s parent company and managed its overseas assets. In 2013, it acquired land in Mäntsälä, Finland, for its first data center built from the ground up outside Russia. The first phase opened in 2014. In 2015 and 2016, server heat began supplying the municipal district heating system. The facility’s planned capacity was approximately 40 MW.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began, Nasdaq suspended trading in Yandex N.V. shares. Preparations to separate the Russian and international businesses took nearly 2 years. The transaction was completed in July 2024. The Russian services were transferred to a consortium of local investors. The Dutch group retained its international businesses, engineering teams, and the Mäntsälä data center. Cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence became the restructured group’s core business.
The name Nebius combined “nebula” and “Möbius.” The Latin word “nebula” means “cloud.” “Möbius” refers to the Möbius strip, a surface with one side and one edge. In the brand’s interpretation, the combination conveyed the extensive possibilities of cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence.
The 2 source words were blended into a short, unified name. The opening “Nebi” retained a phonetic connection to “nebula,” while the ending “ius” linked it to “Möbius.” The name was intended for the international market. It encompassed cloud services, software platforms, machine learning, data storage, and data processing. It could bring computing clusters and development tools together under one brand.
The agency Kidults created the first identity in 2022. The studio prepared the platform for its international launch. It developed a visual identity that distinguished it from other B2B technology companies. The strip motif was incorporated into the NEBIUS wordmark. Custom letters were drawn to embed the name’s idea in their shapes.
The logo consists of large uppercase sans-serif letters with consistent main heights and stroke weights. Straight horizontal strokes sit alongside broad curves and softened corners. The “E,” “B,” and “S” maintain the shared lettering style, while ribbon-like bends appear in the “N” and “U.”
In the initial “A,” a smooth curve connects n,” 2 vertical strokes. It passes through the letter, forms an elongated loop, and extends below the wordmark’s baseline. The familiar shape of the “N” becomes a folded ribbon. The motif repeats at the base of the “U.” A curve wraps around the bottom of the letter and rises on the right toward the vertical stroke. Both loops connect the logo to the Möbius strip while remaining part of the word NEBIUS.
The primary wordmark was rendered in black, conveying the ribbon motif through the letters’ contours. Kidults prepared guidelines for using the logo in interfaces, business materials, and cloud products. The wordmark’s proportions and the loops in the “N” and “U” were preserved across formats and sizes.
2023 – today
In November 2023, European cloud infrastructure for training and running artificial intelligence models launched as Nebius AI. The platform brand preceded the corporate group’s adoption of the name. A color version of the logo with revised letter proportions dates to the launch period. Dark blue replaced the black lettering, and the team prepared versions for different backgrounds and reproduction methods.
The uppercase NEBIUS wordmark retained its horizontal arrangement and the ribbon-like bends in the “N” and “U.” The letters were widened slightly while keeping their existing geometric foundation. The “E,” “B,” “I,” and “S” maintained the overall lettering style, while the 2 modified letters referred to the Möbius strip. The initial “N” retained its loop. The lower curve of the “U” was reworked to extend the ribbon form on both sides. The new contour remained integrated into the complete wordmark.
The primary color became a dark blue close to charcoal blue. It was used for the entire name on a white background. Light-colored and acid-green versions were prepared for dark blue backgrounds. The identity also used lime, white, and black backgrounds. An outline version of the logo appeared in dark blue on lime or in white on black.
The letter construction allowed individual sections to be highlighted in color and solid fills to be replaced with outlines. Every version preserved the contours and ribbon-like connections. The “N” was extracted from the name for compact applications. Its loop carried the Möbius reference into the abbreviated emblem and connected it to the full Nebius logo.
In 2024, the cloud platform’s name was adopted by its parent company. Nebius Group was publicly introduced on July 16, after the sale of the Russian businesses was completed. Yandex N.V. shareholders approved the name change on August 15. The legal name change to Nebius Group N.V. was completed on August 20, and the ticker symbol NBIS replaced YNDX on August 21. The dark blue logo became the corporate group’s shared wordmark.
The update extended to the Finnish data center built by Yandex. Dark blue NEBIUS lettering with ribbon-like bends in the “N” and “U” was installed on the facade of the Mäntsälä facility. The new brand appeared on infrastructure operated by the existing engineering team. In October 2024, the company announced an expansion of the facility to 75 MW. The abbreviated “N” began to identify Nebius’s cloud platform, computing clusters, and international infrastructure.
