Communications in Japan have come a long way from landline telephony to modern digital services, and a single major telecommunications group plays a major role in shaping this infrastructure. The NTT logo is associated with a company that provides telephone, internet, and corporate network services to residential and business customers. The logo is perceived as a symbol of a stable connection that supports daily work, communication, and the functioning of cities.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT): Brand overview

NTT’s history began in 1869, when Japan’s first telegraph line, 32 kilometers long, was established between Tokyo and Yokohama. By 1890, the first long-distance telephone line was opened. By 1900, the number of subscribers exceeded thirty-five thousand. In 1926, the Ministry of Communications was established to centralize infrastructure development.

After the destruction of World War II, restoring communication networks became one of the main tasks. In 1952, the state corporation Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation was founded. It received all the assets of the country’s telecommunications system. By 1956, the company had launched a microwave line between Tokyo and Osaka. By the late 1960s, electronic switching systems had been introduced, and its own communication research laboratory had been opened.

In the 1970s, NTT implemented facsimile transmission and completed the national telephone network. In 1979, fiber-optic lines began to be used. The company was privatized in 1985. After that, it became Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation while retaining partial government control.

In the late 1980s, the company launched the ISDN digital network. In 1999, the holding was divided into NTT East, NTT West, and NTT Communications. In 2000, NTT DoCoMo introduced i-mode, the first mobile internet service. In 2002, it launched a third-generation network.

Since the mid-2000s, NTT has been developing fiber-optic networks and international IT services. In 2010, NTT DoCoMo launched LTE. In 2012, NTT Data acquired Dell Services, strengthening its position in the U.S. market.

By 2020, the company became the first in Japan to start operating a fifth-generation network. Soon after, the operator NTT DoCoMo was fully acquired. In 2022, the rollout of the next-generation IOWN network began, based on photonic technologies.

The company remains Japan’s largest telecommunications group and continues to develop artificial intelligence, cloud services, and Internet of Things infrastructure.

1984

NTT (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone) first appeared on the Japanese telecommunications market with an unusual, concise, and austere logo designed by Yusaku Kamekura of the PAOS agency. Instead of the soft, rounded lines typical of telecommunications companies at the time, he proposed a completely different style.

The logo features the three-letter abbreviation NTT, which sets the tone for the company’s visual style. Each letter is rendered in a bold, sans-serif style, with no decorative elements. The characters are set in a typeface in the spirit of Eurostile Black Extended or Microgramma Bold Extended. A distinct feature is the leftward rotation of the letters. This creates a subtle sense of perspective, making the text appear slightly tilted backward, reflecting a company looking toward the future.

Yusaku Kamekura, a master of minimalism, achieved the desired effect through this simplicity and conciseness. The austerity of black and the firmness of angular letters became a visual reflection of the company’s technological profile.

1985 – 2025

In April 1985, NTT Corporation unveiled a new look to the public. Yusaku Kamekura of the PAOS agency presented the company’s updated logo, which moved away from the familiar austerity of the past toward a more vibrant and emotional image.

The first thing that catches the eye is the symbol, rendered in a rich blue (#007AC2). It is formed by a closed line that creates a drop-like shape within a ring. The image turned out to be ambiguous. Some see a stylized eye or a tear in it; others make out a human ear; to some, the symbol simply looks like a regular bagel. It is precisely this ambiguity of the symbol, rooted in simple Japanese forms, that creates the expressiveness the designer intended.

To the right of the symbol is the company name, composed of the three capital letters NTT, set in bold black type with square serifs. The font is visually similar to Clarendon or Egyptian Bold. The thick strokes and strong serifs contrast well with the symbol’s softness.

The combination of an abstract symbol and austere text has created a fresh, recognizable image for the corporation, marking another important milestone in NTT’s brand identity.

2025 – today

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Logo

In July 2025, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation officially changed its name to NTT, Inc. The name change is part of a large-scale program to implement amendments to the NTT Corporation Act adopted in April 2024. Although the brand’s visual symbol remained unchanged, designer Yusaku Kamekura, in collaboration with the PAOS agency led by Motoo Nakanishi, updated the logo’s text, giving the name a fresher, more concise look.

The company’s symbol, created by Kamekura, remains unchanged; it still consists of a blue shape resembling both a stylized drop and an abstract ring. In the new version, the focus has shifted to the text. The letters NTT are now capitalized and rendered in a sans-serif font. Its style is similar to modern versions of Helvetica and Neo Sans. The text color matches the symbol’s rich, vibrant blue.

The logo was unveiled on May 9, 2025. The official launch took place on July 1. The updated logo underscored a new era for NTT while maintaining continuity in its visual identity.
