River cruises follow routes that combine travel with exploration of cities along the riverbanks. Accommodation, meals, and organized stops are provided on board, creating a seamless travel experience. The Viking River Cruises logo is associated with a company that organizes cruises on European and other rivers, offering itineraries with cultural programs and comfortable accommodations.
Viking River Cruises was founded in 1997 by Norwegian Torstein Hagen. The company started with four ships operating between Moscow and St. Petersburg. The main focus was on English-speaking passengers aged 55 or older. Most of the clients came from the United States. Travelers were offered cultural routes along Europe’s rivers.
In 2000, the company entered the U.S. market and opened its headquarters in Los Angeles. In the same year, it acquired the German company Köln-Düsseldorfer, known as KD River Cruises. This enabled control over docking facilities in major European cities.
Since 2004, Viking has operated in China and launched Yangtze River cruises. By 2014, the fleet numbered fifty-two vessels. In 2015, the first ocean cruise took place. After that, the brand was renamed Viking Cruises.
In 2016, the company launched a river cruise program for Chinese tourists. In the same year, 23% of the shares were sold to the investment funds TPG Capital and CPPIB.
In 2020, the company announced the creation of the Viking Expeditions division. It organized research voyages to Antarctica and the Arctic. In 2022, the company operated 92 ships worldwide and served about 470,000 travelers.
On May 1, 2024, Viking Holdings carried out an initial public offering. During the IPO, the company raised $1.5 billion and received a market valuation of $10.4 billion. Torstein and Karine Hagen retained a controlling stake, holding 87% of the voting power.
Lea Talaktak became President of Viking Holdings. In the summer of the same year, Anna Silvesso assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer of the group.
Meaning and History
What is Viking River Cruises?
The world’s largest river cruise operator, founded by Torstein Hagen, manages a fleet of more than 70 vessels and operates about 100 routes along the rivers of Europe, Russia, China, Southeast Asia, Egypt, and the Amazon. The core of the fleet consists of Viking Longships with a capacity of 190 passengers, designed to pass under low bridges and through narrow locks. The journeys include excursions, lectures, workshops, and relaxation in spa areas. The company combines comfort with an educational format, offering routes along the Danube, the Nile, and Asian rivers focused on cultural immersion.
1997 – today
The Viking longship became part of the Viking River Cruises identity in 1997, when Torstein Hagen founded the cruise company with four river vessels operating routes in Russia. Its travel program focused on history, culture, and exploring cities. Excursions, lectures, and experiences at the destinations occupied the main place in the program.
Torstein Hagen proposed the name. It refers to the founder’s Norwegian origins, Scandinavian shipbuilding traditions, and seafarers who explored distant lands. The full name corresponded with the company’s early river routes. After entering the ocean cruise segment in 2015 and launching expedition voyages, the company moved to the shorter name Viking.
A traditional Scandinavian vessel forms the basis of the emblem. The elongated black hull ends in a raised bow with a decorative spiral. Above it is a sail composed of several magenta stripes. The lines rise from the lower edge and curve to the right, resembling fabric filled by the wind. A thin horizontal yard crosses the upper section. The silhouette shows the hull, high bow, and open sail.
The longship refers to the age of Scandinavian seafarers. In the logo, the image combines the company’s origins, name, and travel theme. The historic Nordic vessel refers to Northern European culture and the exploration of distant lands.
A two-line inscription appears beneath the ship. The word VIKING uses large black uppercase serif letters. The smaller words RIVER CRUISES appear below. The typeface resembles Trajan and Caslon. The upper line identifies the brand, while the lower line indicates its early specialization in river cruises.
The travel format is intended for passengers over the age of 18. The program focuses on history, culture, and education. The slogan “For The Thinking Person™” addresses an audience interested in knowledge and new experiences. The Longships share common architecture, light interiors, and restrained Scandinavian styling. The company describes them as floating hotels in which routes, excursions, and exploring cities play the main role.
The longship image appears on the bows of the company’s vessels. The shared image connects Torstein Hagen’s Norwegian roots, the fleet’s appearance, and the cultural program of the cruises.
