West Virginia Power: Brand overview

The history of the West Virginia Power baseball club is linked to the Charleston Senators team, which had played in Charleston since 1910. The Senators’ first home stadium was Wehrle Park, followed by Watt Powell Park, built in 1949, and a key venue for local baseball. At various times, the Senators were affiliated with the Cincinnati RedsDetroit Tigers, and other teams, and won the American Association championship in 1958.

In 1971, Charlie’sCharlie’s team appeared, named after owner Bob Levine’s father. The Charlies won two International League championships, including a 1973 victory as an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Baseball returned to Charleston in 1987 with the Wheelers, who competed in the South Atlantic League and won its championship in 1990.

The West Virginia Power name emerged in 2004 when the club moved to the new Appalachian Power Park. In 2009, Power became a farm club of the Pittsburgh Pirates, a partnership that lasted until 2018.

After losing MLB affiliation in 2021, the team joined the independent Atlantic League and changed its name to Charleston Dirty Birds, symbolizing the coal-mine canaries of West Virginia.

The word “POWER” was set in an italicized font with a three-dimensional effect. The typography referenced the style of sports graphics from the late 1990s and early 2000s, conveying an impression of intensity and competitive spirit. The elongated and tense letterforms enhanced the sense of speed and vigor.

The color scheme combined gold, yellow, and olive tones. Gold symbolized the richness of the state’s natural resources and its industrial heritage, while the darker shades visually balanced the design, lending it stability and depth.

The color palette featured gold and black, with darker accents becoming increasingly pronounced. The contrast between the shades created a sense of tension and power. At the same time, the gold maintained continuity with the previous version, continuing the theme of West Virginia’s regional wealth and natural resources.
